Hi ladies, I posted a question on the single and pregnant board, but didn't get many responses. It's the custody and visitation thread. If any one has any input, I'd love to hear it.

Visitation is differnt in all states. You will have to research it for the state that you live in. As for custody..most states make the parent wanting the child to prove that the other is unfit. I live in TX and we have different visitation steps for different ages. Here a child cannot stay overnight until the age of 3. Until that time the visiting parent(father in my case) can only see the child for about 4 hours 2 days a week. Whether or not it is supervised is up to the court. My ex also wanted custody but had to prove that I was unfit and that he could afford to support our son. Well when it came down to it, he couldn't prove me unfit since I support my son and had a wonderful career. I had to drive 2.5 hrs one way and back everyday to work and the court saw that I was willing to do all that I had to do to take care of my son. The court also looked at where we were living and decided that my mother was more fit to keep my child then putting him in daycare for 8-10 hours a day. It all just depends on the state. Research your state family code laws.

As a social worker for social services, I would encourage you to know the family laws of your county. It is also extremely important to develop a positive relationship with your child's father. You do not have to be friends but at least become partners in making decisions for the benefit of your child. Good Luck!
