Anyone Had This Done Before

Drs found out ds had hydronephrosis( swelling of the kidney) when I was preg and has been on antibiotics ever since birth. They are trying to establish why they are swollen and one investigation involved inserting a cathater and taking xrays as he peed. This was quite stressful and he cried loads. Friday he has this thing called MAG3 which involved inserting a tube into him that will carry a radioactive substance to enable radiologist to take detailed pictures of his renal function. On top of all this he's had lots of ultrasounds too... im just dreading to think what all this exposure to his system is gonna do to him long term..all this radiation! Im so upset..has anyone else heard of this MAG3? I tried googling it and there are no reader friendly sites, its filled with medical lingo for drs nothing for parents... thanks in advance

Hi hana, sorry i dont know anything about this procedure,i just wanted to sympathise with you and hope all goes well.x

Hi - March 5

The words you need to look up to do research on this MAG-3 are called MAG-3 Renogram Scan.I'm unsure about the exposure long term myself. My son had the gallium scan ,which injects radioactive liquid into his arm and then they take pic's at different times to locate infection. On top of several xrays when he was sick.So far he seems ok.They try to protect their family jewels. From what I've read about it says they inject the radioactive stuff and start taking pic's,test should take between 30-60 minutes give or take.Try to google what I gave you and you'll find more on it.Take care.
