Baby Food Rice Cereal

My girl is 5 months and 2 weeks old. Lately, I've been giving her a tablespoon of rice cereal a day. She was okay at first, but now she makes a funny face as if she doesn't like the taste. Does this mean that its too early to be feeding it to her or she just doesn't like the taste of it (she spits it out). My mom said she used to put applesauce in ours becuz we didn't like it either. When can you start giving jar food and what do you usually start with? or....should i just be sticking to formula.

Firstbabe I don't know the answer to this, but I'm having the same problem. Ds is almost 6 mos., we just started cereal this past week. I don't think he likes it either. We've tried the cereal really thick, and we've tried it really watery, and he doesn't seem to like any of it. I actually bought some "real" baby food today and have been thinking about giving it to him, too. I think we're supposed to start with veggies first, because once they get the sweet fruits they don't want anything else? Anyways I hope we get some answers here, lol! Good luck!

Thanks..........don't know?

Babie vary when they are ready for solids. It's sounds like your baby still has the reflex to push her toungue out. She's not purposly pushing the food out, it's a reflex. Once your baby can hold her/his head up, sit up mostly without help, and doesn't push the tongue, you can try the cereal, then advance to baby foods. hope that helps!

Hi there. Have you ever heard of Dr. Sears? He says that rice cereal is not even necessary to give babies, it's just become tradition that it is the first food. Actually, mashed avocado or mashed banana is an equally good choice for a first food, easy to digest, and not just loaded with unnecessary carbs. If your baby doesn't like the rice cereal, just try something else. I wish I had known that with my first baby, with my 2nd I plan on trying to skip the cereal altogether, or maybe just once in a while.

P.S. there is a lot of iron and zinc in the rice cereal/oatmeal, so make sure you choose mashy foods that have those nutrients. :)

whatever you dont give fruits first. Ds is also 5.5 months and has already developed a sweet tooth and will spit out all veggies lol today i added some pear juice to come carrots and broccoli mash and he just was able to take a tad in. DS also didn't take to rice cereal too well..he sitll has it in his last bottle but would take it at any other time, so i just started baby jars and sometimes mash some homemade stuff. He's been seriously constipated after having bananas so be weary of that.

Well, rice cereal is also "binding" and will make your baby constipated potentially. My son only liked the oatmeal. There are options other than bananas too, like mashed peas, etc. Just keep in mind BRAT: Bananas, rice, apples, toast all constipate! Oatmeal has more fiber. If you want to give cereal, try oatmeal with mashed banana maybe. Sorry for all my answers but I thought I would tell you what I heard (On Dr. Phil :) ) from Dr. Sears.

Thank you so much.......so I bought apple sauce and sweet potatoes today so I guess maybe I shouldn't use either? I'm so confused.

Lala -- he's definitely not pushing it out.... he just doesn't want to swallow it, lol. And he makes this face that looks _exactly_ like my husband's "I don't like this food" face. That's why I've been thinking of trying something other than rice cereal. My mom told me that none of us liked rice cereal, too!, lol. And she used to add a little baby fruit to it to make us eat it. Hey firstbabe, I bought apples, sweet potatoes (my personal favorite) and peas today. We tried cereal again today, this time I had my mom feed him (she gives him bottles during the week when I'm at work) in case he just didn't want to eat from me... no luck. I'm really thinking I'm going to go ahead and try the peas tomorrow... doesn't seem like it'll hurt him, and at most I'll be out the money, no big deal. Good luck!

Firstbabe, DS is 5 1/2 mos. old and I've already started feeding him other foods besides cereal. So far, i've tried sweet potatoes, peas, carrots, pears, peaches, and applesauce. And cereal of course. He loves rice cereal mixed with a little applesauce or pears. And his other favorite is sweet potatoes. I would introduce a new food every 3-4 days and see what he would like and what he didn't. He eats the ENTIRE jar of sweet potatoes. He loves it.

Oh and he's not overweight or anything. He just loves to eat. =0 It took him a while to get used to eating because he would spit it out a little, but i kept trying and eventually he took it in.
