Baby Pushing

I have a 3 week old boy . My LOVE!! I have a question. At times he pushes.. the type of pushing to poop. But he does it, it seems when it is not necessary. I was wondering if he maybe he uses the pushing reflex to try to get rid of other disomforts. like air. is it possible that he pushes when he has to burp? not knowing that that isnt how to get rid of that ?? Otherwise why does he push so much at times? when it is not necessary?

he is practiceing useing his rectal muscles so that when he starts going on his own they work good.

They do it because their developing their muscles. It takes them a little longer to push a bm down since those muscles are not quite yet developed. He will also push if he has to burp and can't get it out. Be sure to get the air out because it will continue to move throughout the digestive system until it can eventually come out as painful gas.
