Baby Refuses To Nurse Off One Side

My son who is almost four months old started refusing to bf from one side- and doesn't want to lay on that side either when he goes to sleep. I've tried feeling his ear and other places on that side to see if anything seems to hurt, but doesn't seem to. I had to go out and buy a pump to try and keep up milk production on that side. Anyone had a similar problem or any ideas what could be wrong? I don't want to lose my milk totally on that side!

Does he have an ear infection or something internal that could be bothering him. Also you can try different positions so he doesn't have to lay on that side to nurse. Try the football hold I think it is called. Basically you hold his head in your hand and his body will drap across your arm to feed him on the right side instead of putting his head in the crook of you elbow. That will switch the side he is laying on to nurse on whatever side he wont nurse on. Then you can use the traditional cradle hold for the side he takes fine. Also concider calling your doc or lactation consultant. That side is producing milk right? They may be able to give you an answer to why he is doing it….

I'm starting to think he may have been favoring the one side for a while and without realizing the production was decreasing on the other side. I've been pumping for about three days now and I am having a bit more luck with him eating now off that side. I've tried the football hold but it didn't work. He has a four month appt coming up next week so I hope things turn around here so I don't have to go in early. Thanks for the input.

They say that babies tend to favoe one side. They also say that milk usually flows faster on one side. It could be that it is either too slow or dast for him. Is he pulling at you? and getting mad at it? or do you see lot of milk production when he pulls away? You could have a clogged duct or two, which causes lew milk to flow. Try warm compresses and ma__saging the b___st...then keep letting him latch on. I know that it can be frustrating but I had the same problem. I had a bf counslor talk me thou it and it worked....I felt a sight pinch in my b___st. I had a clogged duct and my lo was getting mad....Good Luck

I didn't finish the sentence...sorry. "I felt a sight pinch in my b___st when it unclogged" The more he feeds on that side the better it will come natural again.
