Those of you who have started feeding your baby solid foods (baby food) how old was your child and what types of foods did your Dr. tell you to start with?

Hi, my son's doctor said he was ready for solids at four months, but in all reality it took him two or three weeks to get the hang of eating with a spoon. My doctor's office said to start with rice cereal, then oatmeal cereal and save the mixed cereals for last because they can cause more allergies. They also recommended starting orange and yellow veggies before green to avoid tummy problems. My son never would eat the rice cereal from a box that you mix with formula or b___stmilk, but he loves the kind that comes in a jar. Good luck!

Lucas was almost 3 mos. He already had been getting rice cereal for reflux, so I went straight to orange veggies, sweet potaotes, carrots, squash. I did fruits next, and then green veggies. They are ga__sier and he already had enough issues with gas. He has done just fine. I did each one for a week to watch for allergies since he is alergic to soy. I now feed him two meals a day. Oatmeal and fruit in the morning and a veggie in the evening. I just let him eat til he is full and turns away.

We started at 4 months with Cereal (first Rice, then oatmeal then barley) Then we went to veggies and started with the bland veggies first (green beans, peas, squash, carrots) Then went to the sweeter ones (sweetpotatoes, corn, etc) then went to fruit. I still have not tried all the fruit because she doesnt like most of it. We were planning on starting meat at 8 months but that has gotten pushed off since she had a stomach virus and we had to pretty much start over witht he feedings (keep rice down then bland veggies etc) I am not sure when we will start meat but this is what we ahve done so far. Oh and I have not done juice either.

FF: Did you do anything special to help get your son use to the spoon?

I started Joey on solids at 6 months old. He took to the spoon right away but I had to let him suck on the bottle inbetween bites for a while till he figured out that what was going in on the spoon was going to take care of his hunger. We have also let him eat small pieces of chicken at 7 months and he LOVES it, along with mashed potatoes. He basically wants to eat anything we're eating and will let him try as long as it's healthy food. He get's bored fast with the same old stuff and eats better when he's getting a variety.

I started Renity with cereal around 3 months, and have since progressed to potatoes, broccoli, green beans, squash, pears, applesauce, and DH wants to give her a pineapple-pear combo on Saturday, which is when she gets her next new food. I got her used to the spoon by letting her play with it - it has a rubber tip that she likes to chew on, cause it helps her gums. So, now when I try to feed her, she knows that she wants that rubber tip in her mouth, and opens wide. The hard part is getting her to let go of the spoon.

I knew when my first daughter was ready, at four months, because she literally swiped at my food when I brought it to my mouth. She ate rice cereal at first, and I did not have any rpoblems getting her to eat, although she barely ate anything in the begining. I started with veggies, and I dont know if it really makes a difference, but my daughter readily eats her veggies, whereas her step siblings are more reluctant. (They are coming around.)

Thanks for the help!!

I don't know what the duct tape comment was all about, but no, Eryn I didn't do anything special, just practiced.

Put the food on the middle of baby's tongue. If you put it on the tip, it's really easy for baby to spit it out.

Andrews Mommy - January 12

Andrew is 5 and a half months and started last week on rice cereal and then early this week I started him on peas! So far so good!!!! We have fun with the spoon.........he grabs for it like mad - I love this phase it is so much fun to watch him!!!
