My lo had black bm today...just started on solids and has had applesauce..ok, squash...ok, sweet potatoes..ok, bananas...ok would one of these cause this color of bm? Please help me with this I have heard black bm is bad but hoping it is just because of the solids........thanks ladies

I can't really see any of those causing a black bm. Black bm isn't always bad, but I would call my pedi ASAP.

oh, has he started a vitamin supplement with iron in it lately?

hi rabbits thanks for trying to help me with this cause I am really worried.......no he has not had any supplements but I did leave out that I have given his oatmeal not a lot really but he has had some....doctor office closed maybe I should call ask a nurse or something?

I am looking through the book I have and it is giving me no help does not mention black bm.....son is fussy has noone had a child that has had this?

yes, I would call ask a nurse to see what they say. I'm like you...always heard that it isn't good...but a nurse would know more about any other symptoms that would be indicative of something bad, or if it is normal. Let us know what they say.

I called nurse said lots of things could cause this but of her list he has had none of the foods.....said could indicate old blood...they need a sample of stool to test...I don't have one cause this happened at babysitter....he seems to have calmed down now and is smiling like his old self ...whew....she said if he has another or gets upset again and is unconsolable like he was then to take to emergency room.....I will watch him like a hawk.....RABBITS you don't know how much I appreciate you caring and trying to help you seem to be the only one who really tries consistantly and quickly ......you take care and I will let you know if anything else happens later.....thank you again from the bottom of my heart.......

I am not trying to say any thing about anyone else I just appreciate you Rabbits in my time of being scared and worried.....

I agree! Rabbits is awesome! I forgot about the blood thing and allergies! mason had black stools the other day and was very barfy and cranky after trying a beef dinner jar for the first time. I took him off it immediately, but didn;t even connect the black stool. I bet that's what it was! I am glad you called the doc too, better safe than sorry!

I'm glad to hear that he seems to be feeling better. I'm happy to be able to help whenever I can and I appreciate the good advice that I get from you ladies also. I know all too well how horrible it feels to be worried about your little one when something doesn't seem right! Thankfully, most of the time things are fine and we poor moms just have to breathe a sigh of relief.

good morning all!!! Boy do things look better in the light of day!! It amazes me how panicky (is that a word?) I can get when it comes to my lo.....I am usually such a calm and easy going person that can deal with anything but someone elses blood lol.....but I guess I will have get used to freaking out when it comes to my little boy.......so believe this or not this is what I did last night after I left the forum....I went to the babysitters house to dig in her trash and find the diaper in question that started this whole situation........uh uh uh......anyway so I found the dirty diaper and checked out the color for myself......I am pleased to say after much investigation and a little smearing of the evidence I found that the color was dark dark green and not black!!!! This means that nothing is wrong and I freaked out for nothing....babysitter felt really bad that she got me so upset but hey I said I would rather be over worried than to miss something important......this being a mother makes you do things you may have never thought you would do....I mean going through someone elses trash? Lol I can laugh at myself now but that was a very worrisome time last night....Now when I called nurse last night she was listing things that could make bm black and you will never guess some of the things she was listing.....stuff like charcoal, cig ashes, oreo cookies, red cough syrup etc and I was kinda b__wn away by the first 2 things......how would they know charcoal and cig ashes could make a bm black if someone has not ingested those in the past? Wow!!! Makes me wanna say "here's your sign"!!!!! Thanks again for your support....

It soudns like you have a really good babysitter! Good for her for keeping you updated on things. Better safe than sorry, KWIM? Let her know that!

Don't I know it bonnie!!! I am lucky that family can watch my lo even though he does go to a differant relative everyday of the week....it really works out well though cause lo is surrounded by people who love and only want the best for him....he get to develop a bond with other family members and they get to spend quality time with him....he is the only child who is their blood of my generation.....I am speaking of my dh family ......I tell them everyday how greatful I am for their a__sistance.....in my case it really is taking a village to raise a child lol!!!

black bm could also mean blood , so i would definantly call the dr.

I just read your post about digging thru the trash ROFL. That is something I would do now that I'm a first time mommy. Before my ds I would have thought you were nuts but that totally seems logical to me. Funny huh.

iron can cause black stools.

Austinsmom I am glad all is well. I just read the post today and was going to tell you to check the color thouroughly but you already did. I once thought Kai had black stool and sort of freaked but the nurse told me to go outside in the sun and inspect it...sure enough it was dark green and spinach like shich was totally normal. She had been on hypoallergenic formula and had new yellow poop so it turned dark when we made the switch to GoodStart. Her poop has been dark dark green ever since. You are an AWESOME mom for digging a poopy diaper out of the trash. I am sure I would have done the same (actually I would have made daddy do it) LOL!!! I am glad everything is ok. By the way, Bree showed us some pictures of Austin...what a CUTIE PIE!!!
