my son i think has an allergy / sensitivity to rice cereal - i know, weird - considering it's supposed to be okay for a starter food. anyhow, i gave up on it and he eats everything else - my ? is - do babies have to have cereal or can they go without? he eats fruits, veggies, some meats, etc. just fine but should i try him on oat or wheat cereal (aren't those more likely to cause allergic reactions tho?)

My daughter never liked the cereal so I stopped trying to give it to her. I do give her real oatmeal (not the baby stuff) with fruit on occa__sion now.

I've met a few peopel with babies who are alelrgic to rice but do fine with oatmeal. They don't HAVE to have cereal. But the boxed cereal gives a lot of iron and they generally need more around the 6 month age. If he is drinking plenty of formula or if you BF and eat plenty of iron sources I wouldn't worry too much.

Kyler has a rice allergy so we have oatmeal instead, he also is eating the Gerber puffs which has rice in it but hes been fine with those so far (its day 4) I don't think they need cereal as long as you are meeting their iron needs in other ways.
