Croup

Just curious if anyone has dealt with the croup. My 15 month old has it, and boy is it scary. I have been dealing with bronchitis for about 9 days now (am on my 2nd round of antibiotics), my 4 year old just started anitbiotics for bronchitis, and last night the baby started this raspy breathing and barking like a seal. Dh took off work today since we are all so sick, and he took our son to the pediatrician. They gave us some meds and some advice, but I am still scared because my son's breathing sounds so terrible.

My kids had croup last month..it was aweful. The ped. gave them steroids in the office, and one of my kids had a second dose at home. It gets worse before it gets better. But it will get better. :)

uggh..I hate when my kids have croup. It sounds so horrible. Did your ped tell you to turn on the shower hot as possible to steam the bathroom and to sit (in the bathroom, not the hot shower hehe) with baby and let baby breath the steam? I here that helps. Hope you all are feeling better...

They did not give him steroids, unless is albuterol a steroid? He is taking that as well as an antibiotic because he also has an ear infection. Yes, they told us about the shower and also to take him outside for about 10 minutes because the cold winter air will also do something to improve things. We just totally bundled him up and wrapped him in blankets and dh took a little walk around the block with him in the stroller. As for me personally, I had to have a chest x-ray today because my doc thinks my condition may now have progressed to pneumonia. Ugh... when it rains it pours, huh?

Hey nerdygirl.....albuterol is actually a breathing treatment they can get to breath better. It should work really good. Yeah, you can either take him out in the cold for about 10 min or in a hot steamy bathroom for a little longer. It will help open up his airway...

My brother had croup when he was little so I know how scary it sounds..sending you "get better" vibes Nerdy Girl. So sorry to hear you're dealing with this

How can you tell the difference between an average cold and croup?

snugglybugglys - March 5

The cough is just different from a normal cold. It literally sounds like a barking seal. When you hear it, you will no. It was the first time my kids got it, and I just knew it. Took him to the dr...sure enough....

yeah, what snuggly said---it's more of a dry bark...kinda sounds like "croup"..

And my son sounds like he's wheezing with every breath he takes. That's what's pretty scary. The ped said that it is not actually in his lungs, so that's a good thing. It's all in his throat. We just did the steamy bathroom technique - seems to have helped a little bit. I am really praying that dh can work from home again tomorrow because I cannot seem to get my own fever to break and simply do not have the stamina to take care of the two kids by myself all day when I feel so sick.

Nerdy Girl, you wouldn't happen to live anywhere close to Vancouver, BC, Canada would you?? It really sounds like you need some help!!! Do you have anyone that can come over and help out??

ash2 - March 5

If he cant breath really good and is wheezing you guys need to take him in to the ER...!

What he sounds like right now is what he sounded like when the pediatrician saw him today. He's actually playing normally, but his breathing sounds so bad. I am in Chicago.

Our parents both live nearby but are scared to come over because we are all so sick. They don't want to also catch it.

nerdy girl...my kids had the wheezing too...I had to take one of them 2 times because the 1st dr said he didn't have it. The very next day I took him back and he had it...he is the one that had to take 2 doses of the steroids. I would get a second opinion if I were you.

Well, he woke up today and is breathing normally. Hooray! He still starts crying every time he coughs because it's so painful. I know - I am totally sore all over my ribs from coughing so hard for so many days.

oohhh, poor thing. I was just coming on here to ask how things are going and saw that you had posted already. Glad he is doing better.
