First Time For Cereal

Emma's 4 months old and last night I had her sitting in my lap while eating dinner and she reached out and grabbed some mac n cheese off my plate and tried shoving it in her mouth. Ha ha! She's been so interested in watching us eat lately so I've been giving her samples of juices and stuff off my plate, like the cheese of the mac n cheese, stuff like that and she just loves it so I whipped up a little dish of cereal and br___tmilk, sort of runny, but she just loved it! She was kicking and bucking in her bouncy seat so bad that she smacked the spoon a few times and sent the cereal all over but she'd stretch her mouth open as far as it would go! It was so cute! We made a mess but she loved it and never gagged and wanted more. I hope it's not too early. I was going to call my midwife today and make sure it's okay. I only gave her maybe 3-4 tablespoons but used a little baby spoon. I'd like to do this every night when we have our dinner before she nurses. She seemed to enoy it! Anyone else giving cereal at 4 months?

my dd is 4 months and 1 week and I started a little cereal (by spoon) this week....she does show interest in regular food while we are at the table. She can't quite figure out that the spoon is not a nipple. When I feed her as soon as I take the spoon out of her mouth she screams....lol....kinda funny.

I had a similar situation, when my first was 4 months, she was swiping at a quesadilla when I tried to put it in my mouth. I was shocked and sat her right down for a tiny bowl of cereal. She loved it too, and I gave her a little everyday after that. 4 months is perfect, I think they will let you know when they are ready!

When we make dinner we put her on the counter in her bouncy seat and lately she's been really watching us. If I sit by her at the counter and munch on snacks and stuff and she just stares at me. I started feeling guilty! She looks at me like, give me a taste mom! Most of the stuff I let her taste ends up on her shirt in a puddle of drool but she loves new tastes and gets all excited. If we go out to dinner she sits or stands up in my lap while I hold her and I end up dipping my fingers in anything creamy or liquid and letting her taste. All the old ladies think that's so cute! Ha ha!

She called me and said they like to make them wait till they're 6 months old so she told me to hold off for another month till she's 5 months old. That sucks. She really seemed to like it.

My doc said about 6 months....he said if I wanted to start "training" her I could start with rice cereal with a spoon...just to get her used to the spoon...I just mix a little cereal with water or formula and try to feed her.....she's not got the hang of it yet....it's not as easy as it looks! lol

HEATHER - February 7

Heidi, she sounds more than ready!! even though your dr says to wait, use you own opinion. My dr gave the go ahead at her 4 month apt and she has been getting up to 1/4 cup at night since then she is 5 months and 1 week now. I have now been giving her about 2 Tbs at breakfast time now too. She loves it, we cant eat in front of her cause she just holds her mouth open like wheres mine!.

HEATHER - February 7

oH just be prepaired her poops will get harder and she may not go for a day or so when you start. Its fine and not to worry.

Heidi - February 7

Well I mixed it really runny too. Like 80% b___stmilk and 20% cereal so I didn't think it was a real big deal. I might keep doing it if she keeps showing interest in food!

Hi Heidi!!...I just HAD to respond to this bc Trinity is doing the EXACT same thing! She is really interested in food and watches me when I eat..and I've been giving her tastes too..she LOVES it...well...just today I thought while we were eating dinner"let's see if she'll eat some ceral"...and WOW...she loved it!! then I got crazy...haha...I opened a jar of bananas...hahaha....OMG...she ate almost the WHOLE jar! I didn't know what to do...do I keep feeding her?? I thought...but she wanted it and whined when I stopped. She had NO trouble with the spoon....didn't make much of a mess at all : ) She was leaning into the spoon for more bites, if that makes sense....but so much?? I think she's ready! She's been drinking 36oz. of milk a day now for some time....I hope my doc. doesn't get too mad....she just seems so ready : ) ok...had to share that....it IS fun isn't it??

Wow, that is so weird. I just started my 4 month old on cereal tonight too! lol We just had her 4 month check up yesterday and our pediatrician gave us the okay to start solids. So we made some up for her and she was sooooo excited about eating it.. lol. It was so cute! She did really well with the spoon and just wanted more more more.. so adorable! She also would open her little mouth as WIDE as she could.. she just couldn't get enough. We even took some pictures of her first time with cereal.. lol. It was so much fun! :-)

Oh hey Barb! How's it going? That is funny! Everyone's baby wants to try food at 4 months! Ha ha! I think I might still give her some once and a while when she shows interest again. Last night she c___pped out at 7 and never woke up so I just put her to bed so no cereal last night. How much does Trinity weigh now? Emma's around 14 lbs. She has her 4 month appt on Valentine's Day and gets shots. Ouch! Not looking forward to that visit but would like a more accurate weight on her and height. I weigh her with me so it's not very accurate but she's a little chubber so I know she's healthy. Not sure what she's eating in a day since I b/f but at daycare she eats anywhere from 12-16 oz in 7.5 hours and then nurses when I get home but she's gaining good from what I can tell. It's so fun feeding her! She was like a pro already!

Hi Heidi, my DD was 4 months when her doctor gave me the O.K. for cereal but said to with until 6 months to start on any baby food though. She was so ready at 4 months, they say you will know when they are ready because they get so interested in what you are eating and they try and grab it them selves to eat. My DD is now 6 months old and she wants to feed herself boy what a mess that makes. I let her hold the spoon with my hand at the very end of it so she doesn't think I am holding it, but somehow she knows I an holding it so I give it to her and she opens her mouth real wide and puts it in and on her face it is quite a site to see. We just sit there and laugh and I tell her be careful and she looks at me like I know mom now give me some more on the spoon. She is just so adorable!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for listening to me ramble on and on about my DD

Heidi - February 8

Faith, I'm glad your doc told you that. I think every doc is different. Annoying isn't it? I'm going to give her cereal if she shows interest again in eating like she did the other night. It was too fun. I can't see how a few tablespoons is going to harm her. Everyone tells me how they used to put rice cereal in their bottles when they came home from the hospital and none of their kids developed allergies. So I figure at 4 months I don't need to worry that much. Neither myself nor her DH have any food allergies.

Faiths mommy - February 8

I am sure Emma will do great with the cereal I felt so bad for Faith when we would eat and she would really seemed interested in what we were eating ( she was 3 1/2 months at the time) and she couldn't have any yet, I am so glad we were told we could start at 4 months because if we would have had to wait until 6 months I am sure Faith would have gone crazy if she could only have b___st milk, she loves her cereal and now her baby food. Her favorites are carrots, rice cereal with applesauce by del monte. Last night was the first tme she had chicken noodle dinner she loved it. Again here I go rambling on and on sorry.

Heidi - February 8

Ramble on! That's what we're here for! Do you prefer the Delmonte over Gerber? I saw it's a little cheaper at Walmart. Is it just as good as Gerber or better?

Barb - February 8

Well...I'm guessing Trinity is about 14lbs. too...she was 12lbs. a month ago and she's such a ham! You go for shots on the 14th? That's when we found out I was pregnant last year...on Valentines day! = ) I take Trinity on Friday, the 17th...I got her a prescription for EMLA cream before she gets her shots..it's a numbing cream....hope it works! Other than that,we're doing good...she's growing SO fast : ( I went out and bought her a walker / play thing tonight...hope she likes it. I didn't feed her anymore cereal today bc there just wasn't time it seemed....maybe tomorrow : ) but...I'll tell you what...after a whole jar of bananas yeaterday...WOW....talk about a STINKY diaper today...WHOA!!! LOL...hahaha... pewwww........ oh well....;)
