Foam Mattresses

So, we were out buying furniture yesterday for dd. When it came time to buy the mattress I was so confused. DS has a 2 sided foam one- one side is harder than the other. All along I have been using the extra firm side for him, thinking he gets the softer (plain firm) side when in a toddler bed). However, yesterday the sales person said the softer firm side is for the newborn and the extra firm is for the toddler bed. I could have sworn that my old sales person told me the opposite. I know it probably doesn't make that much difference since both sides are firm. But I was wondering what you everyone else used or how they used it. Also, the sales person tried to sell me a newer mattress that was foam on one side and coil on the other- I didn't get this one (although he almost talked me into it) b/c it was heavier and I couldn't think of lifting it out of the crib every time I had to change the sheets...

i have a double sided mattress as well, and I was told that the firm side is for infants up to age 1 because their growing bodies need the firm support, as well as reducing SIDS risk, and that the softer side was for age 1 -- toddler.
