Gagging Baby

My son is 3 weeks and 3 days old. Very recently he started with this kind of gagging, sometimes followed by what appears to be chewing his gums. He is not spitting anything up when this happens, and it has not happened while nursing. This is our first baby. Has anyone else experienced anything similar? Should I be concerned enough to call the pediatrician?

Most newborns have a good gag reflex. It is normal. My 4 mo old still does it occasionally. Their little systems just need to mature a little. But always ask the doc for rea__surance!

Thanks - everything is new for us! All the books don't answer all the questions.

yeah, my 10 week old girl gags a lot, even still, sometimes leading to spitting up. my doc said that it was ok and she'll grow out of it.

My little man is the same way and has been doing that for a while now. He is 9 weeks old today. I totally understand your concern b/c it is all new to me too. :)

My little girl does it only because she chews her hands and sometimes she doesnt understand she cant put them all in at once. hehe

Jackson sometimes gets a finger all the way in his mouth, too. But the times that concern me are out of the blue gagging. Thanks for all your replies!

My son is 5 wks old and has been doing it for a couple of weeks. A few times he threw up everything he had eaten. The dr. said it is just because they have such a strong gag reflex, especially if they have a cough ot have eaten too much that can trigger it.
