My hubby and I always laugh at that statement, no matter what there's 6wks left of winter, because spring starts March 21. You can't get around that, whether or not the groundhog sees his shadow, I just think this tradition is funny, but that's just me(and my dh).

It is a silly tradition... Does anyone know how it started?

Wow! I didn't know anyone outside of Punxatawney, PA. even gave this day a thought lol.

Well there was the movie Groundhog Day, so that may have something to do w/ it, but I always have known about this tradition and I live in WA, so go figure. I'm going to google it right now.

To answer the question, it was started in the 1880's by German immigrants who already celebrated in Germany, and then moved to Puxatawney, PA. Anyway it was an old tradition pa__sed on from there, except in Germany they used a badger(yikes). Feb 2 also marks Candlemas Day which is approximately between Winter solstice and Spring equinox, so like I stated no matter what there's still 6 weeks of winter. I like the silliness of it though, and if we had a groundhog where I live he would see his shadow because it is super sunny, so I guess we have 6 weeks of winter, lol.

Yea - I'm in PA, too. It's a pretty big deal here in the elementary schools - my son couldn't wait to turn on the TV this morning to find out - and then wanted to go to school early because its movie and cupcake day! Of course - in 6 weeks we'll have the biggest snow storm ever!!!!!

hehe... yeah mcatherine... It's funny. Up until a few weeks ago it WAS still spring (or so it seemed). Now it's colder, but we've still only had a dusting here in Lancaster Co. Today was supposed to be our first measurable snow and we got nada... not a snowflake around!! I'm thinking you are right... we are sooo due to get really dumped on and it'll probably happen just when we think it should be spring lol.

I agree with Eryn there is always 6 - 8 more weeks of winter all the time sometimes longer grrr. My hope is knowing spring fashions come out in the stores and r=this gives me hope spring will eventually arrive.

6 weeks of winter is still pretty long if you ask me! ;)

my dh is from punxsutawney and that's where i went to culinary school(indiana university of pa academy of culinary arts--it just happens to be a branch campus located in punsxy.) let me tell you, those folks are nuts! i never went to gobbler's knob where the "festivities" are held because i had a very important practical in baking and pastry III that day, but people come from all over the place for groundhog's day. there are statues of phil all over town(a new addition--cartoon in nature, like, "baker phil" or something, to give you an idea),and there is a groundhog "zoo" at the library where you can view the real phil and family all year round by walking up to the window and peering in!! i think it's silly, but punsxy native's take it pretty seriously(thankfully, not my husband, lol!) oh, and by the way..in regards to the movie groundhog's day--there wasn't even a bed & breakfast in punxsy until after that movie was made and had been out for years, but i can see the whole everyday repeating itself plot--that town isn't exactly the most happening place, haha! still, i have a lot of good memories from there!

I'll just weigh in and let you know that Wiarton Willie, the Canadian groundhog also predicted an early spring. For once, the groundhogs agreed.
