Help Bonnie Or Anyone Who Knows About Reflux

The past couple days on and off and ESPECIALLY this morning, my DS has sounded mucusy/stuffly in his nose. None of us are sick, and he hasn't been out of the house recently. This is his only symptom and it comes and goes. I remember that happening when he was really small and was dealing with such bad reflux. Ped hasn't upped his meds since his 4 month appointment, and he's 7 months old now, but I called yesterday and she said it still doesn't need to be bumped anymore. Could his reflux be peaking?? Something trigger it to get worse all of a sudden?? Totally unrelated mysterious nose stuffiness?? LOL...Help me out if you can please!

Your DS could still have caught something that maybe you carried, but didn't have any symptoms. However, here's my experience with a similar situation with my oldest DD. We had finally got the reflux under control and then she was really bad again at about 8 months. What we discovered after months of trying everything (she was almost 13 mo by then) was she had allergies. We were upping her meds and finally the Ped GI Dr. sent us to a Ped allergist. Once we started avoiding certain foods and she started taking Singulair, it was back to normal again. If your DS doesn't get better soon, insist your Dr. explore that it could be reflux getting worse, allergies, or illness. Good luck!!!

Reflux generall peaks at 4-6 months, but every kiddo is different. If he is not having anymore pain, then I would agree with your doc that you don't need to up the meds. Only do so if he is having reflux pain. That being said, his reflux can certainly be flaring up. There are quite a few things that can trigger it. Starting solids is one (before they get mobile). Also, teething is another. Mason is 1 now and he has so many teeth coming in that he refluxes so bad that it sounds like I have dunked him in a swimming pool with all the choking. However, beyond the annoyance of him choking, he isn't having pain so we leave his meds alone. Mason never got sinus issues but I know that is a HUGE issue with reflux. I would just do the usual stuff like propping the bed up. If you think he starts having reflux pain then I would go back to the peds for sure. Otherwise, just hang in there until the flare up goes down. :)

And yes, as Patti said, there is always the possibilities of allergies. If ther eis a food allergy though he is going to get worse, especially with vomitting, blood in stools, diareha, etc. Just use your mommy gut instinct. It might be a normal reflux flare up.

Forgot to mention that allergies don't always cause hives and such. They can also cause headaches, tummy pain, sleep problems and crankiness. All of these things our babies can't tell us. Hopefully your DS just has a little cold and he'll be fine in a couple days. I just wanted to share my experience in case it helps you or someone else.

His 2 bottom teeth are just now breaking through the skin, could that be it?

Definately could be it. Mason's teeth have all been coming in at noce and his reflux has flared pretty bad. We're supposed to attempt a ween off his meds in the spring but the GI says it all depende on his teeth, lol.
