How Regular Should A Baby Be

My lo is 3 months and 3weeks old and poops once every 3 days....he is formula fed and I put a small amount of rice cereal in his bottle to help substain him.......two baby spoonfuls in every 4 ounce bottle. My mil is alway claiming he is constipated and wants to give him apple juice and water or even plain water and I keep argueing with her about this.....he never seems unconfortable like he is constipated but when he does go it is usually a good amount ( fills up the diaper) and sometimes cries a little.....not a big production just a little when bowls move and he does not cry everytime. Anyway any help about this would be appreciated.......

It could be the cereal. I started my dd on cereal at 4 mths and stools changed. My ped said that as long as he/she is happy, it's ok. Personally I would never give cereal in a bottle w/o your peds recommendation, before 4-6 mths their little digestive systems just aren't ready for it. But like I said if he seems happy otherwise, it's probably ok, but I would make your ped aware of it. I agree no juice or water unless directed to do so by your dr.

austinsmom, i think it's the cereal in a bottle too. why don't you try rice cereal in only two bottles, mid-morning and night. but don't give him juice for constipation, try pedialyte. my ped recommeded pedialyte when my dd was constipated but now that we switched to carnation good start she doesn't get constipated and I do use rice cereal in two of her 4 oz bottles, mid morning and night. my dd will be 4 months next week.

also, why does your mil say your baby is constipated? if it's not semi-hard pasty stools that look like nuggets then your lo is not constipated. sometimes their stool is just pastey and people think thats constipation but it's not. also, i only use one tsp. of rice per bottle. i think 2 is too much. but you know your lo better than anyone including your MIL.

austinsmom, i just realized i didn't answer your question. pooping every three days is normal. mine goes once a day but it also depends on what formula you use.

austinsmom - April 20

the formula I use is nestle good start dha and ara with comfort proteins......it seems to me that he did not poop everyday before I put cereal in the bottle.....so I am not sure putting cereal in the bottle changed anything ....understand I have not been worried about constipation cause I thought constipation was straining with nothing coming out and when it did it would be hard and in pellets...... I have never had this problem with my lo it always comes out sticky and pastey.......in the past two weeks I went back to work and mil watches my lo and this is why this has come up...I just a__sumed everything was normal untill she keeps telling me differant......NIC NAC thank you for answering my question the way she acts my lo should have a bowel movement everyday and it makes me feel better to know that it may not be the case......can anyone else tell me that their lo does not have a bowel movement everyday so I can have the strength of numbers on my side?

I agree with the others. As long asit is not hard and he is not unhappy, no cause for concern.

I agree with everyone. It is nothing to worry about unless the poop is hard. My son does not go every day, even though I give him water. He is a very happy little man.

jensenc - April 20

my daughter goes everyday but she is bf/and formula fed, so not sure if that makes a difference.

nic nac - April 20

your'e welcome austinsmom, that is the same formula i use. nestle carnation good start dha and ara with comfort proteins. The comfort proteins are predigested 100% whey. Ok. if the affects of rice cereal are the same as before you started using it then ignore my comment stating that it was too much. Why does your MIL think your lo is constipated? because some straining is normal for a baby when they poop.

austinsmom - April 20

NIC NAC I believe the problem is coming from the fact that she believes he should be pooping everyday.....I told her that the book I was reading said that their lower belly would be hard if they were constipated and if you suspect constipation put vaseline on thermometer and insert into a___l area like you are checking their temp and the stimulation will make them go.......well I have done this (because she made me doubt myself) and nothing came out also no hard area in belly........I am not able to convince her and it is really getting old everytime I pick him up her carrying on about this......she has given him apple juice with water without my permission and plain water without my permission.......I really appreciate her watching my lo but war is not far off if she keeps ignoring what I ask her to not to do......I hoped I would have strength of numbers and say I know of 10 (for example) babies who do not poop everyday and are perfectly normal.....see what I am saying?

Sorry, if he's always been on cereal and just started, obviously that wouldn't be it. Seriously, let me tell you, my MIL watched my dd for a few days when she was about 2 mths old (she's now 5 mths), your story sounds just like mine. My dd will go everyday for like 4 days then she'll skip a day or two. I called my peds office and they a__sured me it was fine as long as it wasn't black and pellet like, but did say that I could bicycle her legs to help her out. Well, that is was just not acceptable to my MIL, she says that's just crazy, babies have to go everyday. To which I said well I believe bf babies do, but not necessarily formula fed babies. Anyway, I spoke to my ped again and they actually said that bf babies can go days w/o pooping because bm is so exact to what they need that they sometimes don't go as much. So, it made me think...formula has changed so much since we were children, it's now supposed to be closer to bm than before. If that is the case and bf babies sometimes don't go as often, it could stand to reason. I hope I said that correctly. My LO just went today for the first time in 2 days, but like I said hers has changed alot since feeding her cereal. Seriously, I don't think you need to do anything, and I wouldn't worry unless he's in pain and/or it's hard and black. My MIL used to freak me out in the beginning, she kept telling me there was something wrong with my dd...I felt like such an idiot and that I was somehow doing something to harm my LO. What a pain in the *ss.

I just read that your MIL is caring for your LO during the day and that it just started when you started leaving him with her. Does she prepare his formula? If so, she could be preparing incorrectly. My dh never prepares my LO's formula, but on one occasion I needed him to. Anyway 1-2 days later my dd poops were really hard and she was straining alot. I asked him how he prepared it and it was all wrong. If too much formula is mixed in, they could get a little backed up, the opposite if it has too much water.

austinsmom - April 20

PBJ the commotion has actually just started 2 weeks ago when she started watching him so I could go back to work.....he has for quite a while now not pooed everyday say maybe since he came off of b___st milk and onto formula that was when he was 6 weeks old......but.....I was the only one watching him and so noone else knew he was not pooping everyday ( cause I did not make a production about it and felt it was normal) but now since she is watching him she thinks it is not normal and is worrying me to death about it.......sorry if I was not clear in my earlier post about this....so it is not that my lo just started to have bowel movements every three days but that she has seen (the mil) that he goes every three days and has decided to make my life hell because of it.......gosh can you tell I am frustrated?

Sarahsmommy - April 20

Sarah is b___stfed and they arent' supposed to make as much waste but Sarah doesn't poop every day, and she's now getting some solids and still doesn't poop every day.

Hey austinsmom...I would've responded earlier but my electricity just came back on and it's been out since 3:30. Oh yeah and did I mention I live in Orlando and the temp was only 90 today. My poor LO went to bed without any clothes on...I'm sure she didn't mind it. I'm really sorry for the situation, believe me I totally understand. The only suggestion to give you is to do what I did and just tell her that you've spoken with the pediatrician and he/she says that he is fine. It takes their little bodies a while to adjust, especially to formula, and if you're feeding him cereal, that's an adjustment as well. I would just tell her that your ped has said that you are to absolutely not give him juice or water. That's what I do, if my MIL doesn't agree with me, I tell her I've consulted the dr and he told me "whatever". It works sometimes and sometimes it doesn't because my MIL is hypocondriac (sp?). Good luck, I hope it works out for you.

Linneah - April 20

My son also goes once every 3-4 days, but the ped said that it happens sometimes and theres nothing wrong.
