How Would You Handle This

i live in a house tha was built over a hundred years ago and then turned into an aparment building. I have these neighbors that like to stomp up an ddown the stairs and slam the fron door going in out out. we all used to be like a small family around here until i asked them to be quieter going in and out of the house. you see the stair case is attached to my wall and the hallway that leads you to the front door I also share a wall with and every squeek and stomp is echoed into here. them being so loud have woken dd up alot and then the slamming of the door doesnt help either. i have told them they are being loud in the hallway and asked them just to step a little lighter in a very nice way and them seemed to be understanding and told me that they would try and quiet down. well 30 min after that convesation they all left aat once all stomping down the stairs laughting and carring on in the hall and woke up dd again. i would understand them not caing if we all lived in an apartment building but we dont and its not as if i was rude or am rude and keep them awake when they obviously are sleeping when they all know i could i have the center apartment and shear a wall or ceiling with every neighbor. how do i go about explainging to them how loud they really are and try to get them to be a litle quieter. it is almost like they are doing it on purpose now

i forgot to add that the ones i share a wall with are constantly fight ing and banging on the walls and throwing thins and we hear every word i cant afford to move untill taxes come back and even then it will be a struggle moving will raise rent no less than 300 a month and this behavior from them is geting out of hand

i would buy a tape record and record them then when they least expect it and their being nice an quiet or sleeping i would bang on their walls an when they came knocking on the door play them the tape of them being loud and annoying some times being rude is the only way and if this doesn't help call the police there are noise ordinances everywhere i'm sure you have one to its drastic but it just might work
