Ok, my baby is 13 weeks old on Wed. and he is acting completely different. I think it's constipation but I'm not sure. He is on formula and he NEVER misses a meal. But the past couple of days he has not been hungry. He has not pooped since Saturday (it's Monday night) and he usually goes everyday. His stomach is hard and tonight he would not take his last bottle with cereal. We have been giving him cereal for about 3 weeks now and he seemed to be doing great on it. Are you supposed to give some sort of fruit or applejuice when you start cereal? Anyway, tonight he was just screaming and we tried everything, changed his diaper, gave him a bath, tried a pacifier, bottle, gas medicine, and baby tylenol. He finally fell asleep but without eating! Do you think he is constipated or sick?? This is my first baby and I am worried. We started cereal b/c he was 14 lbs at his 2 month doc visit. What do yall think.

wow 14lbs.! I do know that changing the food your baby eats will have an effect on there pooping. We tried giving it to our little guy, but he ended up being constipated after about 3 or 4 days. He never actually stopped going to the bathroom, but his poop was pebble like and hard. I do know that he was miserable. All he did was scream and cry. We gave him so prune/apple juice and it didn't do much, so then we gave him karo syrup. Do 1 tblspoon per 2oz. You can mix it with water. I hope this helps!! Oh only do it once and only do it when needed, it's not good for them especially when they start cutting teeth it can rot them. This is what the doctor told us to do.

one per day when needed.

Definately sounds like constipation. The early solids don't help but I understand. Mason was started early for the ame reasons, is 19 pounds now at 17 weeks and wearing 12 month clothes! :D....anyway, I deal with constipation a lot and we also see a pediatric GI specialist because he also has reflux. So here is what I know about pooping.......when on solids their poop can change. But not as drastic as what your is. If you let constipation go too long it creates big problems. Baby realsies that it hurts to poop so holds onto it thus making it harder and even worse. This can become an ongoing thing. For now, if he normally goes once a day, you want to keep him going once a day until he has had a good long time to adapt. First thing....run out to Walgreens or wherever and get yourself some baby suppositories. These are no fun to give, lol. Glycerin ones are just fine but Mason kept squishing them out his b___t cheeks! lol So we switched to Fleet baby liquid suppositories (they are basically an enema). The package says under 2 ask a doctor but I can tell you from experience and from what my GI said thay are just fine to use a whole one on. (Call your ped if you want to verify). Be warned, they work quick!! lol The suppositories are not addicting and do not get into the system so you can use as often as you need. They just aren't fun to give is all. ;).....

Next.....speak to your ped and see if you can offer some juice and maybe start some fruits early...like prunes. They help. Also.....a big one...lay off the rice cereal. It is VERY constipating. Switch to Oatmeal a bit. I make my own mixed cereal for Mason. 1 box oatmeal and half a box each of rice and barley. When Mason is backed up I only give the oatmeal asit is more laxative (plus he likes it better anyway)..lastly, call your ped and ask about giving milk of magnesia and what dosage. My GI has me giving this to Mason daily to keep his poop soft. I'm not a fan of medicating daily, but it's necessary for him. As his poops become mroe soft we are then to start weening him off it. You give this at night because it takes a while to get in there. Mason then poops by afternoon the next day. But ask you ped. The GI has Mason on 1-2 tsp and the bottle says that for a 2-5 year old! Mason weighs more than yours too so you'd have to speak to the ped.........so....oatmeal, fruit if you can, MOM if you can.....and a good ole suppoitory daily if he doesn't go to keep him from backing up.

I am having the same problem at present, so I took my DD to the doctors today...the best thing is cooled boiled water with brown suger in it, works a treat for constipation. Now you are putting cereal into the bottles, I would offer some water, or watered down juice during the day, as cereal will bind them up at first until their tummies get used to it. My DD is on anti reflux formula, and the same applies here.

So when you do start cereal you are supposed to give some kind of fruits?? I guess this is why your not supposed to start cereal so early? I called his doc today and he told me prune juice. I am going to try this and hope it works. Bonnie, a box of regular oatmeal and half a box rice/barley baby cereal??? Is he to young for this at 3 months?

Hmreyna, you don't generally start fruits straight away, but it helps if they are constipated. He is younf for cereal in general, but oatmeal has a more laxative effect. You don't want to give everything at one time though because if he has an allergic reaction you will never know what caused it. The problem with prune juice is that I could never find any that wasn't mixed with apple. So if he reacts you won't know if it was the prunes or the apple. But you can still go with what your doctor said and see how he does. Give him the juice and o other new foods for 2-4 days. After that, switch to oatmeal cereal for 2-3 days, and then to barley. etc. etc. You can go to other 1st foods as well after that always going at least 2-4 days in between. (4-5 days if allergies run in your family.) Once you know he reacts okay, you can keep giving the ones he has already had, just only introduce the new foods one at a time. Especially with him being so young. I would give teh juice first and then get him off that rice cereal asap. Rice cereal is the least hypoallergenic (which is why they start on it), but it's the most constipating. Did you ask him about the suppositories? If your son has been backed up a couple days the juice may not be enough to get him going. You may have to clean him out the first time, lol. I find with Mason that when he eats rice cereal along with prune juice AND prunes...he STILL backs up, which is why we had to use milk of magnesia.
