Infant Sleep Issues

I'm scared I have started a bad habit early. When I brought my son home from the hospital he wouldn't sleep in his pack and play. I was scared to let him sleep on me for fear he would roll off or I would smoother him. I eventually gave in. He is now four weeks old and I can't get him to sleep in his crib. The only way he or I get sleep at night is on his belly on my chest. When I try to put him in his crip he sleeps for about ten minutes but then wakes up crying. I have one of those soothing bears but that doesn't seem to phase him. I have been told to just let him cry and he will wear out and cry himself to sleep but I feel like a bad mom doing that and eventually pick him up and put him back on my chest. He'll nap during the day in his swing but I haven't been able to put him in at night to sleep, he wakes up crying as he does when I put him in his crib. The same with his carseat. I have found that he likes to sleep on his belly. That seems to be the only position he will sleep in his crib. Durning the day that's ok because I can check on him from time to time but at night when I'm sleeping I'm not comfortable leaving him on his belly. Does anyone have any advise, is there any hope or should I get use to endless nights of back sleep?

You can buy the monitor that will make a sound if he stops breathing, at ToysURus I think. It's like 100$ but would put you at ease to let him sleep on his belly..
