Is It Ok For Him To Sleep Thru The Night

I have a 3 week old son that likes to sleep 5-6 hours or more at one time thru the night. When he was born he was on a 4 hour feeding schedule but now that he is 3 weeks he seems to be feeding every 4 hours during the day and 5 or more hours at night. I wake him up after 5 or 6 hours to feed him to make sure he is getting enough to eat, but my question is when is a baby old enough that you can let him sleep as long as he wants at night. Last night I fed him at 8pm and put him to bed at 9pm and I had to wake him up at almost 3am so he could eat, he then went back to sleep until 8am. He usually drinks around 4 ounces at a time and has about 5 bottles a day. All my other kids were the kind to get up every 2-3 hours at night so this is new to me.

If he is gaining steadily and getting enough I would think it would be okay. I asked a similiar question when my lo was a newborn. Some people say you should wake them up after 4 hours and some say 6 hours max at night when they are really little. I personally did 6 hours because my lo was a great sleeper and she was gaining weight fine and having plenty of weight diapers. But she also ate every 2 hours during the day. I dunno about 5 bottles a day being enough though? Maybe one of the bottle feeding mothers out there can help you on that. ( 5 bottles in a 24 hour period doesn't sound like much for a 3 week old) Can you feed him every 3 hours during the day and then every 6 hours at night if he sleeps that long?

I say 5 hours at night is OK to let them sleep without feeding - nothing longer. Three weeks old is still too new to let him go longer. I can't believe your son is already eating 4 ounces. And I think 5 times a day is not enough. My 15-week-old is only at 5.5 ounces, 5 times a day. How big was your son at birth? Mine was only 5 lbs., 12 oz. Maybe that's the discrepancy.

My dh was 8lbs 3.5 ounces at birth. When I had my last one who is 19 months now he was 8lbs and the doctors said if he sleeps thru the night that was ok, but now they say every 5 hours is the limit. He goes on Monday for his WIC appointment so I'll see how much he weights then and call his doctors to see what they say. I'll let you know.

If he's eating 4 ounces, i think he might be getting enough food during the day. I would let him sleep at night time so he gets used to, but that's just me.. I believe that a baby would wake up if he's hungry.. I wish I was getting 5 or 6 hours of sleep at early on.. :D My friend's baby is 2.5 months old and he sleeps from 10:30 to 6:30, he was b___stfed for 2 months and as soon as she switched to formula, he's been sleeping the whole night. Good luck

I just had him weighed today and he is up to 9lbs. 10 ounces so he must be eating well. The lady at WIC said as long as he's gaining and eating enough thru the day he can sleep 6-7 hours at night if he wants to:)
