She finally went to the doctor today and found out she has shingles on her butt. She had it when she visited us up here and held Gretchen a lot!!! What do I do now??? What should I look for to see if Gretchen is getting chicken pox????

From what I heard it is easier to get shingles from chicken pox than it is chicken pox form shingles. Mary has a virural infection in her mouth (like cold sores) the doc said is the same family as chicken pox and shingels. You could call the peditrition to see what he thinks. I was around a co-worker who had shingles when I was pregnant and my ob told me he wouldn't worry too much. Of course I had already had chicken pox myself. I would deffinately look for signs. If she doe get it now, at least she will hve it out of the way…..good luck, hope she doesn't get it.

Thanks. I hope she doesn't get it! She's been itchy today, but she's kinda always itchy with the dry skin, so it's hard to tell if it's something more.

Here's how my doctor explained it to me (my Father-in-law had it while my first ds was a 6 months): Zoster virus manifests itself in chicken pox and shingles, you can only get shingles if you've had Chicken Pox. Even if you've had Chicken Pox the virus stays dormant in your body and typically manifests itself later in life in people with weakened immune systems. A person with shingles is therefore contagious to people who have not had Chicken Pox.

Great, so now Gretchen's going to get chicken pox. She hasn't had the vaccine. I'm sorry, but da*n it!! My little bro is always sick, and he comes up and gets me sick, and my mother gives Gretchen chicken pox. Splendid. Absolutely splendid.

I would just watch her and not worry i had shingles a while back...I was told to watch for chicken pox....but he never got them...and i was bathign with him and didnt know it....

Okay, thanks, Deirdra. Do you know if the contact has to be direct? Like the shingles would actually have to touch her skin?

Don't freak out!! My dd goes to daycare and kids there had chicken pox but dd never go them. This was before her vaccine too. Just watch her closely and don't worry. I was so stressed, and as it turns out, it was for nothing.

I heard that you need to have direct contact with a spot where the shingles are. So, if thats the case, thank God your Mom has them on her b___t!!!! Gretchen certainly wouldn't have had contact with that area. rofl.

Heck no she wouldn't! :) I know it's sad, but I too am glad they're on her b___t and not her arms or something like that. I just dont' understand how she got it, I mean, I know how the disease works, but it's not super common in people under the age of 60.
