Need Advice Formula For Colic Reflux Gas Symptoms

I posted a thread the other day about colic b/c my baby girl who is now 10 days old is fussing allot after meals, and spitting up and having lots of painful gas after her meals. We had a bad episode last night (fussing for about 2 hours on and off), and then again this morning for about 2 hours after her feeding. She crunches up like she is in pain, and will also spit up a couple tablespoons of her meal after most feedings. I am currently br___tfeeding, and everything is going fine with her latching on and my milk supply. I do NOT eat dairy in my diet b/c I myself have an intollerance to dairy, so I know that cant be the culprit. I have had some advice from family/friends who said they knew of people who had similar problems with their babies, and they put their babies on special formulas, and the colic symptoms went away. I really want to br___t feed, but not if it means my baby being in pain and crying after every feeding. Is there anyone out there who can suggest a formula or who has been through a similar experience???

I can't say much for other problems - though those are probably symptoms for a number of things as you said - but going through what I have been through with my daughter - I would say acid reflux. Plus, from what I've heard, ten days is a little early to have colic. I'm sure I could be wrong, so please no one attack me for that. All I can tell you is that with my daughter, we put her on Zantac, and she also started eating the Enfamil A.R. formula - but since you are wanting to b___stfeed, I wouldn't give up just yet. Talk to your doctor and see what your options are. I formula fed from the beginning, so switching to that wasn't a big deal. Good luck, and I hope that woman with experience in other areas of complications might be able to chime in.

Oh, and a bit of hope if it is reflux - most babies do grow out of it. My daughter is almost five months, and is no longer on the zantac, and seems to be doing fine.

April- did you b___stfeed at first with your daughter, and then switch to formula? Did the formula work better for you than b___stmilk? I have heard so many people who said that some formula worked better for their babies than b___stmilk, but I find that so stranges since b___stmilk is designed for human babies. I am willing to try a special type of formula if it helps with her digestion.

Unfortunately no, I have always formula fed, because I take several medications, that I knew I couldn't take and b___stfeed. That's why I say, talk to your Dr. before giving up on b___stfeeding - but don't get discouraged if you do have to stop. It is nature's design, but sometimes even nature can have a glitch! Hopefully you can find a simple solution that will work such as a reflux medicine (there are several) or maybe even something as simple as gas drops - I know they were a tremendous help with my daughter, and they are safe to use throughout the day. If it is colic, she'll grow out of that too, which I know is only a small comfort when you've got a grumpy baby on your hands, but something to keep in the back of your mind. Really though, all I can say is talk to your pediatrician!

As Aprilmum said, it may not be just gas. If b___stfeeding is something you really want to do, I wouldn;t give up just yet. Check out the symptoms page on www.infantrefluxdisease.com for possible reflux and check with your doc as well. :)

Have you ever visited the Kelly Mom site for b___stfeeding concerns? Here is the site (no dashes) with a link I foudn about gas. http://www.kellymom.com/babyconcerns/ga__sybaby.html Don't throw in the towel on b___stfeeding just yet! I have experience with quitting b___stfeeding, and it still makes me sad to think about. I successfully b___stfed my daughter for a full year, so I was prepared to be able to do the same with my son when he was born. He was a horrible b___stfeeder, ga__sy, could not latch, we got thrush... the list of b___stfeeding problems was endless! I stuck with it for 6 weeks and then pumped for another 6 weeks, and then swtiched over 100% to formula. I still regret not being able to b___stfeed him as long as I did with my daughter. Anyway, we had to go through some different formulas and bottles to find something that would help his gas. We ended up with Enfamil Gentlease and Dr. Brown's bottles. We also have to burp him frequently, like every couple of ounces while he drinks. If you are having success with b___stfeeding and only this gas is an issue, try to do some troubleshooting before you throw in the towel. Once you stop b___stfeeding, you can't really go back. Do you have a lactation consultant you can call?
