Newborn W A Cold

She is only 6 days old, congested and cranky. We didn't sleep last night, I am constantly sucking the boogers out of her nose. Is there anything I can give her to help her feel better for the time being?

At only 6 days, I don't know...have you tried giving her saline drops? Also, try adding humidity to the air. If you don't have a humidifier, boil a pot of water...and if you have or can get dried (or fresh) mint leaves, add that to the water, and see if that helps. (At the very least, your house will smell minty fresh, though that's not much consolation with a sick baby girl!) I hope she starts feeling better soon, and congratulations.

Oh! Do you b___stfeed? My husband got my daughter sick when she was about 2-3 weeks old, I think - I put some Vick's Vapor Rub on my b___st, about 2 inches above my areola, where she could smell it but it didn't come into contact with her. You could maybe try that.

Poor little baby! My daughter had her first cold at 6 weeks, and I asked around but there's really nothing you can give them when they're that young except the saline drops. If she likes a bath, you try that to help clear her nasal pa__sages for a while. Hope she's better soon.

try boiling water with salt in it, I heard from a Dr. that it will help clear a stuffy nose

Sounds like you are doing the right thing. My son had a cold real early on, and sucking the boogs out really helped. She'll kick it quickly. Just keep an eye on her temperature! And keep her eating!

My son was very congested in his first few weeks, but my doctor said it wasn't a cold, but rather a very normal occurance in a newborn. He said many newborns are congested for the first few months of life. I bought a humidifier and some saline drops and they have both helped out a bit, although, even at 7 weeks, he's STILL congested several times a week. :o)
