OT Anxiety Feeling Like Crap Today

Yup - here's my vent for anyone who will listen. I've had anxiety attacks for a few years now, and have had three this week. It's getting me down because I was hoping I had outgrown them. I haven't taken any medication for them, and i'm hoping someone out there has some suggestions to help cope with them. I'm going to start counselling next week I think, because I really hate getting these attacks. Anyways, any good thought sent my way will really be appreciated today - thanks :)

I get them too, though not that often anymore. I dont how you feel, it is the worst feeling in the world. You can probably find some books (or look on the internet) for some relaxation techniques. As soon as you think you start to feel an attack come on, you start doing the relaxation techniques and they can really help. I forget the name of the one I used to use ( learn it in a psychology cla__s) but it really helps. You concentrate on one area of your body (neck, arms, stomach, legs etc) and tighten all the muscles and then force yourself to release them, all while breathing deeply. You have to really concentrate on it but I swear if you can get the hang of it, it really helps!!!

Oh SuzieQ, I get anxiety attacks too and for some reason the past week has been really rough for me. I have been depressed lately though and I notice they are a lot worse when I am feeling down. I take xanax when I have a really bad one but also doing what Jessb said helps. You really need to have the willpower to focus and calm yoursef down but once you get the hang of it, it does help. Good luck sweetie.

Thanks ladies :) I'm glad I'm not the only one! I have a perscription for ativan, but I haven't taken any yet. I haven't been doing my breathing and relaxation techniques since my dd was born - 4 1/2 mos. I guess sometimes I get so tired of dealing with them - it's a bit frustrating. Thanks for the positive thoughts :)

i totally feel for you SuzieQ... i get anxiety attacks too and i dont take meds either.. i find for me a hot bath is soothing, and then right after i go lay on the bed with the fan on me.. If that dont help i try to focus on something else like a book or doing something with my kids.. if all else fails a good cry sometimes helps... hope you are feeling better!!!
