I say if they have a viewing, go and show your support to your friend. The funeral itself is up to you. We were just in the same boat as you. Our bf's grandfather had pa__sed away. We didn't know him, but we went to the viewing to show our respect to our friend and his family. We chose however not to attend the funeral since we didn't know his grandfather and felt that was best reserved for the family. Just our opinion though. Sorry to hear about the situation.

That's a tough situation....I know some families like the services to be reserved for family only. I would definitely give the friend a call or visit and let her know how sorry I am that her grandfather pa__sed away. I would just tell her that I was there for her 100% and that you are available to go with her for support if she would like for you to. That way you are leaving the door open for her to let you know if she wants you to come or not....if she doesn't then she still knows that as her friend you were ready and willing. That way you don't have to worry about not going and having her think that you just didn't care...though that may not be the case sometimes things get misinterpreted.

I would say to go to either the viewing or the funeral. My bf came to my gandmothers funeral and it meant alot to have her there.
