how easily does it happen? I worry that when I burp him or bounce him on my knee in play that it is shaking him too much. When my hubby burps him I always say 'careful, you are shaking him' and umm, my dh is starting to think I am insane...

I remember a few years back there was this case on tv about shaken baby syndrome and some expert appeard in court and showed how hard you would have to shake a baby (i think the baby was like 6 months old) and how fast and hard until you had shaken baby syndrome and it was pretty HARD. I'm pretty sure this can't be done accidently, definitely not that easily trust me!

I think you're right, ImpatientMommy ~ I think I may have seen that, or something similar. And yes, it seemed like a violent shaking. I guess if it were that easy, cases of Shaken Baby Syndrome would probably be rampant, everywhere we looked. I don't think casual bouncing and burping could result in Shaken Baby. But pregnantjackie, I bet a lot of our husbands think we're insane.. don't worry. :-)

thanks ladies..that is a big relief. I am a ftm and still in the stage where I constantly check to see if he is still breathing. You could say I'm a little paranoid

Jackie-burping and light bouncing are fine. Its the strong rattling where the force would cause the brain to slam into the skull that causes damage during sbs - I am sure you are doing fine :)
