Please Help Do I Have An Infected Milk Duct

Ok, I think that I have a clogged/infected milk duct. I have a very red/tender area on one br___t (sort of feels like it's bruised). All day yesterday I was very achy, had the chills & I definitely had a fever last night (it felt very similar to the flu). I didn't put two & two together until today, so I just figured out that it may be a clogged or infected duct. I have left messages at my dr. office, but they are closed now. Anyone have any advice? I feel terrible?! Thank you.

a__suming that you are bfing, you need to continue to have you lo nurse that b___st. it is best if you can orient you lo so that his nose opposite the lump as much as possible. That is difficult to explain so I will try to give you an example using a clock. If the lump is at 3 o'clock, orient the baby so that his/her nose is at 9 o'clock and the bottom lip is at 3 oclock. It may be awkward, but it works. You can take motrin or tylenol for the swelling and achiness. Just so you know, the area will be bruised or tender for a few days after the problem has resolved itself. You can place a warm wet cloth to help with let-down prior to nursing or take a warm shower - but I have found that orienting the baby is the best fix. Someone on here recommends nursing on all fours (which seems really awkward...I have never had to try that). I will check back later to see if you have any other questions or if I am not describing it well enough.

kellens mom rocks when it comes to these kinds of things.....but...I have had too b___st infections both felt exactly like you describe....ther first I was able to make go away with nursing as kellens mom described and using a heating pad...the second was much worse and I ended up needing antibiotics....try without first be/c with the antibiotics I also needed diflucan bc I develop a yeast infection in my brest and baby gets trush and so on and so on......Can you believe a infected milk duct could make you feel THAT bad??!! good luck

It sounds like you do, I have been having repeated problems w/ a duct in my left b___st becoming clogged and here's what I have been doing. Breastfeed as much as possible, pump if necessary, take a warm shower and ma__sage the lump(this can hurt). I also would go to kellymom.com to get other advice. If it is a recurrent problem I will tell you on kellymom they recommend taking lecithin supplements and I can tell you I have been doing this for a month now and it is helping me so much, lecithin helps to mix fats and water, and I think I had a tiny duct that gets clogged with milk fat, I actually had a tiny white blister on my nipple. I followed the lecithin regime and haven't been getting clogged. Oh btw, I did have blood in my milk when I pumped both times, that freaked me out, but I called my doctor and she said it was ok, but if that happens call your doctor. I just pumped and dumped the milk, but the doctor said it was okay for my dd to nurse and that she would be fine.

Thanks everyone! I also read about nursing on all fours...just not seeing how that will work! :) I did end up calling my dr. because my temp went up above 100, & I feel just awful. I really can't believe that something in my b___st makes me feel this awful. Anyway, the dr. said that it sounds like I have mast_tis (sp?) so she called in lecithin for me. Kellens mom, the area is on the inside of my left b___st, should I try the football hold for nursing? Ds is just over 5 mos & I have been b___stfeeding exclusively...is this normal?? Thanks so much for all the help!

Scratch the lecithin, it's keflex that I am taking. Anyone with success from this?

Okay, orient the baby so the baby's nose is pointing toward the lump.
