Pumping At Work

How many times do you working moms pump at work? I finish pumping in the morning at home at 7:15 and drop Emma off at daycare and I'm at the office by 7:30 a.m. I figure I'll pump between 11-noon cus I start to feel full but then will wait till I get home at 3:30 to nurse her. Does this sound too long or should I pump more? I got 5 oz this morning and usually get more at lunch time.

I don't bf, but just wanted to see how you and Emma were adjusting to working/daycare? Is it getting easier?

I haven't gone back to work yet but I don't think 3 3/12 hours is to long. How long do you go overnight without pumping. I would think that would be the longest you want to go. I would try posting this question on the bf questions you can probably get a better answer.

It's going pretty good actually. Thanks for asking! I made myself take her to daycare last week part-time and I came in to work part-time to get my mind off it and I didn't tell anyone I was doing it so there was no pressure. I didn't cry either. I was surprised how well I handled it considering I bawled the day we met her daycare mom!!! Hormones must have gotten to me. But it's going really good. Today is my first day back full-time. It was hard getting up in the morning that's for sure. I was tired all morning. At night she still wakes up to nurse but I know it's at least 4 hours till she does and I don't feel like I'm gonna b__w or anything. I just pumped and got like 9 oz. She's still only eating like 3-4 oz at a time and I'm pumping before I leave the house. I figured if I'm really full when I get home and she's already had a bottle at daycare I'll just pump and store that too.

Thats good Heidi! Glad all is well. It is a challenge to wake up and get both going early. I still don't get any sleep!

Lisa, do you still feel full after you pump? How long have you been pumping? At first that's all I could get was a couple ounces but I'm on week 14 and this morning I got 5 oz out of one side (my better side) and then at lunch today I got 4 out of one and 5 out of the other. I have the Medela Pump In Style and I have it set at max speed and it took me 15 minutes to pump that much. Maybe your pump isn't strong enough? Mine comes out in full streams, not dripping. I would suggest a stronger pump maybe? She's probably getting plenty cus you can't compare them with the pump as the suction is all different. She's probably getting more out of you than your pump is. That's what I was told and it makes sense if ya think about it.

thanks heidi, my mum bought me the pump it cost 90 pounds i cant afford another i guess i havent done it lots, sometimes it comes out as a jet, i have noticed it gets better, i never feel full really apart from in morning and dont have huge b___bs so getting the pump to have suction i have to push hard into b___b, it worries me im only getting foremilk and not hind milk

How long have you been doing it? It'll probably get better the more you do it too. I didn't produce much the first 6 wks. At night is the worst. I sometimes can't get anything to come out!

I would pump when you would normally nurse your child. I pumped every 2 1/2-3 hours. You just have to make sure you are relaxed. The first few days, I felt rushed and did not get enough milk. When I stopped feeling guilty from missing work or worried about my desk, I was able to let down and was able to get my electric pump get 5 oz each side every time I pumped.

Hi Heidi, I pump twice a day at work. Every 4 hours. I pump @ 10 am and 2pm and pump once i get home around 6. I nurse my baby over night. I usually get 12-14 oz total while at work.

I feed my baby around 7am, pump at 10am, feed her at noon, sometimes pump around 3, then feed her at 4:45 and over night. I get about 7 oz. at 10am and a few in the afternoon (really don't need this one, but figure the more milk I produce, the more calories I'll burn, right : )

I nurse Emma in bed around 5:30 a.m., get up, pump around 6:30. Drop her off at daycare at 7:20, pump at work at 11:00 and then get home at 3:30 and nurse her and then try pumping before I go to bed. I get about 12-16 oz a day. I hope I can keep up and stay a week ahead. I send a week's worth to daycare so I like to have another week's worth frozen in the freezer so I don't get behind if I can't pump enough one day.
