I'm on orthotricyclen. How does it work? Does it prevent ovulation, fertilization, or implantation? Or all 3? Anyone know?

Good question. I am on errin the mini pill. I have been on it for 3 1/2 weeks. Spot and everything. I heard this is the only one that dont dry up b___st milk. Are you b___stfeedin?

I was on orthotry in past. I loved it!!! I wish I could go on it but I am not sure about it drying up some milk. I have enough to feed my lil guy but not alot of extra. I try to avoid pumping so I will not have to all the time. I pump a few days a week to get enough milk in case I get sick or want to go out a few hours. I a__sume the orthotry did all 3. I never got preggo on it and was not careful with dh.

yes, I am exclusively b___stfeeding. My milk supply isn't the issue cause that's fine.

Hi ladies I'm on orthotri and I don't know either. I'd like to ask my doc about that come to think of it. Just wanted to say that if you are b___stfeeding it isn't milk drying up that needs to worry you it's the hormones. In a mini pill there aren't enough hormones to get to baby, but in a "full size" pill there are two kinds of hormones and both can get through b___st milk. Ask your docs!

Jamie...this pill doesn't prevent fertilization, it just makes your uterus shed it's lining and the egg can't implant itself....which is sad when you think about it bc I was on ortho too and she said there were probably several pregnancies that just miscarried without me knowing it...I just asked my doc. about this last week. She said that any birthcontrol with hormones (except the mini-pill) will stop your milk production and is not recommended for b___stfeeding mothers....then she listed off all my other options...hope this helps :)

If you are b___stfeeding, consult your healthcare professional before starting any form of contraception. You may want to consider starting ORTHO TRI-CYCLEN LO after you have weaned your child completely, because some of the drug can be pa__sed on in the b___st milk (this also may decrease the amount and quality of your b___st milk). However, there are some progestin-only methods, such as ORTHO MICRONOR that have shown to have no adverse effects on b___stfeeding performance or the health, growth or development of the infant.

Okay, maybe some background will help. My doctor and lactation consultant deliberately put me on ortho-tricyclen in the hopes that it WOULD reduce my over-abundant milk supply, in an attempt for a non-surgical b___st reduction. I have been on it for 3 months, and have not needed to supplement at all...instead, my daughter can now, finally, drain 1 b___st all by herself. The reason I asked this question is because 2 nights ago, I'm 90% certain I ovulated. (I can feel it when I ovulate) - the next day, my husband and I had s_x without a condom. I'm now wondering if there is a possibility the birth control may not have worked - if it's supposed to prevent ovulation, then it failed, and I need to look into a pregnancy test. If it prevents fertilization and/or implantation, then I don't need to worry about it.

Huh. "How do ORTHO TRI-CYCLEN and ORTHO-CYCLEN work? Birth control pills, including ORTHO TRI-CYCLEN and ORTHO-CYCLEN, work by preventing ovulation, which means your egg is not released and, therefore, can't be fertilized by sperm. The pill also causes your cervical mucus to become thick, making it difficult for sperm to enter your uterus. You can feel very confident that your pill is working to prevent pregnancy." Looks like I should wait a week, and buy a test. Thanks for the link, tierney!
