Rotavirus Vaccine Worth Its Weight In Gold

I could kiss my ped dept nurse friend who insisted that we do the rotavirus vaccine. Max was seriously vomiting and having diarrhea last night. And when I vomiting, I mean VOMITING. I would get half of an once him him and a huge quant_ty of liquid would come up. It was like nothing I have ever seen. First time, I was holding him and there was so much liquid it soaked completely thru my sweater bra and jeans. I waited an hour and coaxed him to drink and ounce of pedialyte. Five minutes later he vomitted enough liquid lo leave a puddle on the floor the size of a large pizza pan. And on top of that, the force of vomiting would result in more diarrhea. It was unbelievable that so much stuff could come out of the little guy. We almost ended up at the ER, but I was able to get an once/per hour of fluids in him all night. I put him in bed with me and clipped my cell phone to me with the alarm set to vibrate to wake me up. I had brough a bottle of half water/half pedialyte to bed with us and I coaxed him to drink a little every hour and then whenever he stirred a bit. His soft spot was really sunken in, but the ped said that we could continue to treat at home as long as he continued to have a moist mouth and tears when he cried. It was a long rough night. I had to change both of our pajamas twice last night due to his intense vomiting and the sheets once despite having a thick doubled up towel underneith him. If the child has had the vaccine, they can still get the illness, but the duration and severity will greatly reduced. She said that since Max has been getting the vaccine, we could expect 1-2 days of vomiting and 1-3 days of diarrhea. In a child that has not recieved the vaccine, you can expect 3 days of vomiting and 5-9 days of diarrhea. She said that over 50% of children will have it before the age of 2 and 50% of them will be hosptialized. I know Max would have ended up in the hosptial if he had not had the vaccine. I am so glad we did it. Max had a head cold two days before this so he wasn't eating that great but he was eating. I had weighed him at the first of the week before the head cold and he weighed 15 lbs. This afternoon I weighed him again and he had lost 1.5 lbs! Can you image losing 10% of your body weight in 2 days!?!? It is easy to see how children get hospitalized and some die from this virus! I am going to send my nurse friend flowers for insisting on us getting this vaccine.

As a side note - It is a fecal virus that can live on hands for 4 hours and hard objects for 10 days! Soap does not kill it, but alcohol based hand sanitizers do in a matter of seconds. Incubation period is only 2 days. I really thought I was really a cautious Mom. We use one of those cover thingys for the grocery carts and restuarant high chairs, he is not in daycare, and we try to wash his hands several times a day, as well as ours. My hubby went all the way to Sam's club today to buy this 2 quart industerial size pump top container of hand sanitizer. He also bought a bunch of travel containers. There is now one in every room of the house, every diaper bag, gym bag, car glove compartment and my handbag.

My oldest son got it when he was a year old ! He was vomiting and diareah for 2 weeks ! I finally took him to the doctors offive in tears because i didnt know what else to do. Well they tested his stool and drew some blood, he was dehydrated and came back positive for the rotovirus. So they put him in the hospital for fluids IV. That was the most horrible experience i have ever had !

It started yesterday early afternoon. My ped is an hour away, but we took a stool sample to our local hospital. Doc called around 6pm with results.

Clint, my 4-yo was hospitalized twice when he was 13 months old for Rotavirus....it was awful! And the waiting and waiting for cultures to come back....UGH! I'm glad your little one will be okay. And thanks for the heads up that soap and water doesn't kill it...I didn't know that.

He is still really exhausted and is barely taking 2-3 oz of formula every three hours, but his stools are getting a little less watery and coming less frequently. We are just having one after each feeding. That is a HUGE improvement over yesterday.

I had to send Max away today with my parents because we were literally unable to care for him. Hubby and I were each in our respective bathrooms and poor Max was crying to be picked up. I called my dad and he cam and got him. He stayed 10 hours with them. Max still is pa__sing water/ milk curds, but no more vomiting. Still not eating well. Hubby and I are also done with the vomiting part, but still suffering from diarrhea, muscle aches and extreme fatigue. Hubby is going to work tomorrow, but I'm staying home and keeping Max.
