Schedule Change

How can I get my almost 1 year old son on a better sleep schedule? He's been going to bed around 10:30 every night which is way to late IMO. Dh & I are passing out on the couch & he's raring to go! He gets up around 7:30 for a bottle & goes back to sleep until 9:30. I've tried to keep him up when he wakes at 7:30 but that's not happening. He only naps twice a day for about 40 minutes. Sometimes his morning nap is a little longer. Any thoughts or advice? Thanks!

Don't let him fall asleep b4 the 7:30 bottle. That should help a litlle. Also, try a consistent routine. 7pm bath time, then ma__sage, jammies book, bottle........Good Luck

He usually has a nap around 3 or 4pm. I also do the same routine every night. I don't know what else to do to get him to bed earlier.

did you mean he wakes at 7:30 AM and then goes back to sleep until 9:30 AM?i think there is your answer. or is he doing this at night? i was confused. From all the sleep books I have read, they all seem to agree on this -- if the baby sleeps in too late, it will throw off sleep for the rest of the day. You have to look at the day as a 24 hr total, and schedule accordingly. I have also read/heard that in general, babies bedtimes should fall between 6-8 PM. You should check out Ferber's book on sleep -- I was amazed by it, so helpful I thought, I had only thought of him as the CIO guy (which we do not believe in). His book is maybe 5% CIO theory, the other 95% is about sleep schedules and how to implement better sleep patterns. I re-read the chapter on naps recently b/c my dd takes a long morning nap and is now fighting the PM nap (she turns 1 this week), but she had a hard time going that long before bed and gets cranky. So we will have to start to move the AM nap back so that he day will be more balanced and she wont have to go so long in the afternoon without sleep. If he is having a hard time waking at 7:30AM, you may need to get him out of the house, expose him to bright light and do something really stimulating. I think you should check out the Ferber book, it might really help you!

We've also been in the house a lot since it's so cold outside. I'm sure that has something to do with it.

wow....I sometimes have the opposite problem going down to early then getting up to early. How long does he nap? My son who is just over 1 yrs old takes one nap a day, and is late morning around 11:30am, so then he is up running and tearing the house up until he is exhausted at around 8:30pm. Somehow, your LO needs to stay up after he awakens at 7:30am. Then maybe take a late morning or early afternoon nap, then maybe he will then go down for the day ealier. Ditto luviduvi, be very consistent with a bedtime routine. Do you have a consistent night time routine now, where when the routine gets started he is aware that it is almost time for bedtime?

He naps around 11:30AM for about 40 minutes, sometimes an hour if I'm lucky. I do the bedtime routine around 7:30. Bath, lotion & ma__sage, jammies, sometimes a story & then a bottle. He gets a bath every other night but everything else is always the same. I don't know if he's aware that it's bedtime or not. We keep the TV off & the lights dim.
