Could someone explain this to me as they didn't recommend heck they didn't even mention this to me at the hospital. What exactly is it? Is it just water or is there something else used it it? They just gave me a cleansing bottle to clean myself with warm water...??? Thanks in advance ^.^

You just supposed to spritz warm water on yourself after going to the bathroom to clean yourself and then your supposed to pat it dry with toilet paper as apposed to wiping clean - I think that wiping may be uncomfortable for some women becuase of the swelling so this is an alternative. Good luck!

A sitz bath is basically just a shallow bath of very warm water. When I had my first two babies the hospitals actually gave you a sitz bath kit....it was a bowl that fit over the opening of your toilet and an enema bag and tubing, only the tubing connected to the bowl and the warm water would run over your st_tches while you sat there. With all my other babies I was just told to run a shallow tub of warm water with no soap or anything and sit in it for 10 minutes or so...I guess that is a cheaper for the insurance company sitz bath.

Oh, they also used to use a heat lamp at the hospital, but now they told me to use a hairdryer on low setting about 12 inches away....not quite the same as the heat lamp, but helps tremendously!

Good explanation from Rabbits:)...also add a couple tablespoons of epsom salt to the bath. The whole concept is to give the area a warm soak in clean water. This helps keep the bacteria count down so it will heal better. It feels good and clean! try to do the bath a few times a day.

BabySage - I only had 3 st_tches (first degree tear) and never used my sitz bath. I used the water bottle every time I went to the bathroom for the first 2 weeks, and also used Tucks pads (witch hazel soaked pads). The sitz bath seemed like a lot of trouble - who has 10 mintues with a newborn?! :) And basically just the water bottle was enough.

Thank you very much for your answers. I sure don't have 10 minutes per day....heck I am lucky to have 10 minutes every 2 days LoL >^.^< I only have 2 external st_tches even though they had to do an episiotomy so I wouldn't tear right into my bum (had a 100% chance of it /cry ) and cleansing with the spray bottle works well enough. Well thanks again.
