Spoon Feeding Question

I'm trying to start feeding my 5.5mo dd with rice cereal. She has never been a good eater and currently only takes ~24 oz of expressed BM in a day. When I try to give her cereal with the spoon, she's crying like crazy. She does not even open her mouth. I tried it both when she's really hungry and when only half full. I prepared the cereal with milk, formula and water. Nothing is working. Did anyone had a similar problem? How long does it take for them to get used to the spoon? Should I keep trying every day, or skip a few day? Thanks for all the help.

It can take a few days or a few weeks. My dd had it down after about two weeks. Our trick was to do it when she was not hungry just to get used to it. Your lo is only going to get a few baby spoonfuls at first anyway, not enough to fill her up, so all you are really doing is getting her used to it.

I would start when she's not hungry. Try it between feedings first so she can used to the spoon, the cereal - taste, texture, etc...

My daughter was 3 months when we introduced solids to her due to a medical concern. At 3 months, babies dont have a "give it to me, ill hoover it down" instinct. I used to make her food really watery.. and put it in a syringe from the pharmacy. This would let me squirt some of the food in her mouth so she could get used to the texture and taste. We did this for 2-3 weeks... then I put the food on a spoon, and her reaction was excellent. She recognized what was on the spoon, decided she liked it, and thus ate from a spoon. Give it a try!
