what is the real difference between the two? I thought jarred food was jarred food, i know there might be a difference in the cereals, etc but what about the jars?

I had the same question! Yes, they are just bigger sizes and Stage 2 starts to mix tastes also.

Stage 1 food contains one food type. (eg chicken) Stage 2 mixes 2 or more food types (eg chicken + apples). Stage 1 is fed so that we can determine our lo's don't have an allergy to a specific food. Once that has been determined we can start mixing them.

that's what i thought but i got coupons int he mail yesterday for heinz ad it showed satge 1 for beginners in cereal and jars and stage 2 "purred" strained food in jars?that is why i am confused, is it a gimmic to get you to purchase one over the other so they can charge you more? or is it " real" that there is a difference in the stage 1 to 2 jar foods?

Well, they are all packed differently. If you take just applsauce for instance - the only difference between the two is serving size. Stage 2 has an ounce or so more than Stage 1. Also, they mix taste like Lchan said - apples and chicken, bananas with pears, oatmeal with cinnamon - something you don't do when you first start solids. But you can just get plain foods in stage 2 - sweet potatoes, applesauce, pears, green beans - without mixture. I wouldn't say it was a gimmic - just buy stage 1 foods until your baby is ready for stage 2.

so what would it mean when it says " prureed ", wouldn't it all be purred anyway no matter what stage it is?

uk jarred food is totally different.puree is 1st foods from 4 /6 months but 2nd stage is from 7 months and its a lot thicker and has lumps and bits in it.

what about here in canada or the u.s.

shelly - March 8

so many things differ from country to country,in the uk ive never heard of gerber food.maybe in the us and canada the lumpy stuff starts in the stage 3.

I thought I read that the stage 2 had a thicker consistency, not as "strained".
