Talking

my dd is almost 19mths and she has a vocabulary of about 30 or so words but Im just wondering should I be sitting with her and trying to teach her words or will she just learn on her own. I do tell her to say things but she very seldom repeats after me. So I guess I just really want to know what some of you did to teach your lo new words.

Her vocab sounds excellent for her age. They generally pick things up by hearing and learning....if they don't understand what the word means and it's concept then the fact that they can use it won't mean much. Simple everyday things that you probably do already will help her learn new words, such as reading to her. If she watches t.v talk to her about what is going on (eg. if she giggles at something on t.v. say something like "that's funny!" or if a baby is crying say, "baby's sad"...just little things like that to help her build her vocabulary and understand meanings.) Also, anytime you are playing with her talk about the toys you are playing with and what their names are. When she is eating talk about the names of the foods. Repet_tiveness helps them learn at this age, too so don't hesitate to talk about the same thing several times.

When I first read I thought you said she was 9 months and I was thinking, "Wow...30 words at 9 months, she has a genius baby." lol. I agree w/ Rabbits... everyday talk and play is great for them.
