Teething Or Something Else

I'm wondering if my 2mo may be teething. In the past week or so, he's gone from only crying when he's hungry to whinging almost all the time. He's drooling a lot, his hands keep going to his mouth, and he has a runny nose. Also if you hold him to your shoulder he rubs his face in/on it continuously, and he's gone from happily eating 5oz in a sitting to fussing over 2 or 3, and then being hungry again an hour or two later. Could this be teething? His gums look and feel the same to me as they've always done (but I've always thought they feel hard). Any thoughts? Please!?!

Forgot to mention. My MIL also suggested it could be a ear infection - does that fit with anyone?

This does sound like teething, but could also be an ear infection, Does your son pull at his ears, and does he have a fever

Not many babies teeth at two months but it isn't unheard of. I would have his ears looked at both teething and ear infections can make your ears, jaw, and gums hurt so it is hard too tell. At two months, he most likely wouldn't have the coordination yet to find his ears to tug. Hopefully it is just teething. I brought my little one to the doctor this past Tuesday because he was ripping at his ears. It turned out to be teething but better safe than sorry. Good luck.

Thanks for your answers. He doesn't pull at his ears, but as Jennifer B says he doesn't have that kind of co-ordination yet! I'm trying him with teething gel for the next couple of days, and if he's still the same I'll take him to the doctors on Tuesday (I'm busy tomorrow).

I was thinking maybe just a plain old cold. You mentioned the runny nose and irratability. The decreased diet is also common with being under the weather. It could be teething...but very rare in two month olds. Is he running a fever ??

I thought it was a bit early for teething too! I don't think it's a cold, as he's just got over one, and he's not as blocked up as he seemed then. The runny nose seems to come and go with all the drooling and face rubbing.... I wish he had an instruction manual with a troubleshooters guide....

Oh, and nope, no fever.

Well sometimes with teething comes fevers as well. I would just say it is a cold for now.

My ds has been doing this since he was 2 months old and it is getting worse. I keep checking for teeth but I see none yet.

My LO drooled for a while before the teeth actually came through - probably from 3 / 4 months. He got a runny nose and cough at the time when the teeth actually came through.
