Teething Question Symptoms

Last night, my son had one big bright cheek - it was hot and the other one was pale and cool. I assumed it was from teething. Then my husband pointed out that the same side looked really swollen. We have been thinking his lower eye tooth (not sure why that would come in first) is coming through - he has been up 6, 7, 8 times a night. Is the redness and swelling nomal? When will the darn thing come through? Any idea how long after symptoms appear??

It could last for a couple of days. Teeth can go up and down for weeks at a time when starting. Be sure to give infant tylenolfor pain relief.

I am a dental hygienist....how old is your son? A lower eye tooth would be the 9/10th tooth to erupt. If it is the first time that he is teething, it would be the lower central teeth. It is possible that the symptoms could last a few days, up to a few weeks (not the same everyday, worse one day, then fine, etc.). You may find that he needs to suck a bit more to soothe himself, and I give infant advil to my daughter. It lasts longer at night than the tylenol, and I find that she gets a bit of a fever, and the advil seems to work better for her. I also give her the frozen teething rings. Good luck

Thanks for the info... Believe it or not, the little tooth is beginning to poke through. I know it shouldn't be his first tooth, that the others should come in first, but tell him that! This looks like a toughie!

FYI- As good as it is for reducing pain for longer stretches of time, infant Advil should not be used on babies less then 6 mos old. If he's less than six mos old, give him the Tylenol drops.
