The Babbling Stopped As Quickly As It Started

Max was an early babbler. He said Ah-goo and Ah-guy at 4 months (2.5 mths adjusted age for being a preemie). At 5.5 months he started with the ba-ba-ba and da-da-da which was around thanksviving. He continued making these sounds until around Christmas (6mths) then he stopped as has not babbled since. He got the sniffles the first week in January, then the next week Rotovirus, then an ear infection, then a viral respitory infection, and then another ear infection. We have been healthy for about a week. I first wrote off the lack of babbling because of the ear infection, then because he was sick with everything else. He shrieks mostly now, but he does not make any developmental sounds. I know he hears loud noises, as he freaked out over the food processor at home and the sound of a toilet flushing in a public restroom while I was changing him. Now I am wondering if there may be some residual fluid in his ears that is compromising his fine hearing. Any other ideas as to the abrupt stop in babbling?
