I know this is way off topic, but oh well. Since I have been trying to work out, I would like to get one of these for music to listen to while I work out. What is the difference and which would you recommend for just basic playing of songs?

I don't know either for sure....I'm thinking that Ipod is basically just a brand, but I could be wrong. I'm not very techno savvy!

It depends on how long your workout is and how much you want to spend. I have an ipod nano, but i bought my husband just a normal mp3 player with a built in radio and it cost a fraction of the price! If you don't care about brands and what not and you're just going to use it to work out to i would just go for an mp3 player. You can get them here really cheap for about £30 ($60) and thats for a fair amount of memory. The bigger the memory, obviously the more music you can fit onto it. Nowadays you get mp3 players and of course the ipod that can store pictures and video as well as music, some even have games on them. Let me know what you;re going to use it for, how often and for how long at each time and i'll try help you out as best i can :o)

I only am looking to have music on it. I would use it about 3 times a week for about an hour--just want something to listen to at the gym. Don't need pictures or video on it.

Well, we got each of the kids an mp3 player for christmas, but I just picked them out according to what was on sale and said it had the most playing time! I had to get 4 different ones as I didn't want any 2 of them to have the same one (didn't want to hear...THAT"S MY MP3 PLAYER NOT HERS!) so it was not an easy shop. I got each of theirs for between $30-$50 (Alex, the 8 year old got the FP3 player...child version of the MP3) at Wal-Mart. The Ipods were way over the $100 range so definitely out for us. I did see an Ipod shuffle...it was very tiny and cute, but still over $70. I had originally started to splurge and get them the Tiger Mp3 players with the video and stuff, but then after reading the package realized that it had NON-replaceable batteries that rechargeable up to so many times. I did some math and come to figure that they would get about a year and a half of use out of it them before they could no longer be charged. I thought I should get more use than that for $100 a pop, so I went with the cheaper ones that had replaceable batteries. No video, but they don't seem to mind.

That's each of the 4 older kids...I don't think a 4 year old and 10 month old need an Mp3 player....lol

Renea, if you are in the US I seen in the Kmart sale paper they have one on sale for around $30 right now.

I would suggest getting one that is maybe 1gb, that would hold 240 songs roughly so would be plenty to keep you going for a few weeks at least before you got bored of the same old songs andwanted to change them. And if it's just for music and working out i would pretty much get one of the cheapest you could find!

check out ebay, always a bargain to be had on there!!

They're basically the same thing. MP3 players have been around for years. Apple just came out with an awesome marketing campaign and a very user-friendly product that allows you to purchase on a per song basis. For this convenience and ease of use, they're able to sell their iPod for several hundred dollars.

I have an IPod Shuffle and I love the fact that the songs don't go in the same order all the time because I listen to it every morning when working out. Just something to think about when you're shopping....
