What Time Do Your Four Five Y O S Go To Bed

We are having a hard time with our four and 1/2 year old getting up way too early and then he's miserable all day. For instance this morning he woke up at 5:45, came to our bed and didn't go back to sleep until 7:10. He then woke up again at 8:10 which I suppose was good becasue he has to be at pre-k at 9:00. He goes to bed about 8:00-9:00p.m. and does not take a nap during the day. Are we missing something? Do you think he's going to bed too early or too late? We are at a loss and need him to sleep later since his day is so packed and doesn't take a nap.

My four year old goes to bed between 7-7:30pm and usually sleeps close to 12 hours. We are VERY LUCKY, I know. Based on my personal "sleep bible" (Healthy Sleep Habit Happy Child), you should put them to bed between 6-8pm at that age.

Hey sonya...i would try to put him in bed at a routine every night. dinner, bath, book , bed . Make it a ritual and dont be that flexible. Instead of doing it between 8-9, do it at 8. Make sure he sticks with the routine. Kids need at least 12 hours of sleep at night through elementary school to function normally during the day.

Thanks ladies. We do have a set routine and what I meant by between 8-9 is that it takes him that long to go to sleep. He is almost always in bed at 8:00 and sometimes goes right to sleep other times it takes a long time. I agree he needs 12 hours at night I just don't know how to get him to sleep later in the morning.

Try starting the whole routine earlier so that he is tucked into bed by 7:30 and just see what happens. He might surprise you by sleeping longer. That is what my book says will happen. The author says if your child wakes to early, then their bedtime might be too late. Can he tell time? If not, he will not know the difference. :)
