When Did You Start

When did you / will you start with rice cereal? My mom and friends and people we don't know keep telling us to put rice cereal in the formula in a bottle and feed our baby ('cause he's wanting to eat every 2 hours..about 6 oz. at a time). He's only 10 1/2 weeks old. Isn't that a little too early?

You should try to wait until the 4 month mark, unless your baby is very big the pediatrician may give the go ahead early, but I think they like to wait to 4 months.

There are different opinions. It usedv to be at 4 moths but they changed the guidelined to 6 months.I started Jesse at 5 months.

well ive tryed this and i can say my lil one is ok! It was for the same reason that my son was always hungry! The only thing ive noticed is he is a lil piggy now...lol! I only put a lil sprinkle of cereal in there, because ive heard about how he could be too young. My son is 2 months now, i have a feeling im going to be attacked on this forum for doing this, but it worked for me and ive had no problems with it. Id like to add ive only done this about 3 times and it was before bed time, and he did sleep. Last night he slept all night (without me adding cereal) and woke up just a little after 6, my bf and I were sooo happy! All i think u can do is try it, and start off with very little and see if it works for you. I know many people have done this, but dont want to speak out on it here because of the many people against it, who will attack u on your parenting "skills"

I agree their are different opinions on starting cereal. We just sort of did what her dr. told us to do. He said there is the 4 month or the 6 month theories out there. I didn't register the part where you wanted to put it in the formula. That is sort of looked down upon, you should feed with in infant spoon instead if you do choose to give rice cereal. But others on this board do put it in a bottle, my ds isn't bottle fed so I can't offer much advise there, Sorry!

i get this ds and dd thing mixed up. I keep thinking dear sweetie, dear darling, anyway, I have a dd not a ds-- not that it matters....

I don't plan on giving it to him until he's AT LEAST 4 months...but was just curious 'cause everyone keeps telling us to do it and I keep saying no 'cause the doctor told us nothing until 4 months. But then the people that tell us to do it say, "oh we did it with our's and there's nothing wrong." It drives me nuts.

Also, it drives me nuts that when I'm at my parents, they think it's cute to put a dab of ice cream or strawberry or anything on his tongue...and last night my FIL put some really salty popcorn on his lips and tongue. I could just shoot these people!!!! Am I overreacting? I seriously have yelled at my parents for doing that! They think I'm overreacting. That's one of the main reason I haven't let my parents or the in-laws take him!

many people would disagree with this...BUT...my pediatrician told us that we could put 1 TBSP per 4 ounces in his bottle once a day. my son survived. just know, if you want to put cereal in a baby's bottle to help with sleeping, that does not work! i started feeding him cereal with a spoon when he was 4 1/2 months and he ate like a pro. i would talk to your pediatrician about feeding your son cereal this early though.

i forgot to say, my pedi told me i could start at 2 months with the bottle/cereal combo.

looks like you've already answered your question. oops!

ZacsMommy - March 15

i didn't plan on feeding him it until 4 months or more but if i wanted to try it before then, i was curious if it was ok or not.

I used to get mad about stuff like that too zacsmommy. I had it bad with b___stfeeding because everyone told me I was going to starve my baby. I just ended up telling people what they wanted to hear, 'of course I supplement', etc. It is very frusterating with lots of people trying to drive the decision you have to make for your baby. If they are feeding him tastes of strawberry anything, icecream, or salt, you are smart not to leave him with them. Maybe get them a book on grandparenting. Some of them have the new explainations on foods etc, it helped a lot when my inlaws read up on the 'new' way of doing things.

My mom began feeding me and my bro rice cereal at 2 months (that was the ped's recommendation back then). That was 1981 though. And erin is right about cereal not working to help baby sleep longer at night. At least it did not work for my 3 mos old when we tried it.

I would tell people to mind their own business and I do. As far as the ice cream goes, I would think that's the worse thing to give a baby considering they're not supposed to have cow's milk until they are a year old. I've told my parents, in-laws and husband to not give my dd anything without my permission until she's at least a year old. That's what I would recommend doing. Good luck. Oh yeah, and I would listen to your ped. about cereal, he/she knows your baby best.
