Is it possible for real labor contractions to stop? I have had some really painful contractions that have lasted for a couple of hours, then ease up and stop. I am 4cm dilated as of last dr appt and I was just wondering if it's possible they are not just Braxton Hicks, this is my second preg but it's been alot different front the first.

Yes. It is possible. When I went into labor, I labored 5 minutes apart for 45 minutes then just a few the rest of the day. Of course just as I planned on going to bed, I got half asleep and I went into labor 3-5 minutes apart. So, it is possible to go into real labor soon...but it's hard to say when, everyone is different. Good Luck

Brandi- how long have you been 4cm for?? Also, there is a lot of controversy on the subject... The fact is, there really isn't such thing as "real" contractions compared to "not real." When you have a contraction, its real. Its just whether or not the contractions are hard enough to be considered actual labor contractions. When that happens there is no stopping them. So, what you are having now can come and go until baby is on its way with no stopping... which, I guess you can say "the real thing." SO, yea.. what you are having can stop. When they no longer stop and carry over to the next with dilation progress then you are on your way. Which you know since you've went thru this before!? Good luck!! Either way, your 4 cm dilated so baby is on his/her way. ;)
