Just a quick question.. can you start to dialate before you lose your mucus plug? Or do you have to wait for it to come away before you can dialate and efface? Thanks

I am almost 37 weeks and just found out I am 3cent. dilated and partially effaced. That same night I began loosing my plug. its like snot and then the rest came out the next morning. I've been having pains in my lower back now and lots of shooting pains and period like cramps. my stomach has been getting hard alot but not painful it just pushes on my bladder. this has been going on for 5 days now. hope this helps

this might be a stupid question... but what does effaced mean?

I am 40 weeks and have been at 2 cms for a few weeks and I just lost my mucus plug. Have also been having contractions irregularly for a day.

Effaced means the thinning of your cervix :)

Yes you can be dilated before you loose your mucus plug. I have been 2 cm for the past 3 weeks (currently 38 weeks pg) And I lost mine last Wed. However, my doctor did the stripping the membranes and that could have aggrivated it. Also having s_x can disrupt it too.

I was dialated 4cm before I lost my plug. I was in the L&D room just after being checked by the Dr. Told the nurse that I had to use the restroom. When I wiped there was a little blood and mucous. I didnt know what it was, no one had told me what it would look like. I was 4cm, lost the plug and yet my water still never broke.

I didnt lose my plug until right before labour, when my water broke, so yup, its possible.
