Enemas

I was just wondering if they still give enemas to women before they give birth? I know they used to, but I was just wondering if they still do. I am due in 20 days and want to be as prepared as possible.

i don't really think so. I think they just deal with people pooping on the table. I was thinking of giving myself an enima before i go to the hospitakl so I don't have that prob. What do you think?

No, enemas are no longer given at the hospital. I never pooped delivering, but it is common and the nurse/doctor will not tell you if you do either. I say you can do some research on it. Personally, I started going into labor 2 days before I delivered, not hard labor, but I knew it was coming. I just decided to eat small fiberous meals so I wouldn't have to deal with being constipated at delivery, it worked well for me. Some women firmly believe in giving themselves a enema before labor, I don't think I could ever do it. I would talk to your doctor/midwife about their opinions on it.

I am so glad you asked this! I posted on the 3rd trimester forum about this just tonight. I am getting induced on Wed. and was thinking of doing one ahead of time and was wondering if anyone ever has, if its safe, if it makes you sick, any info would be helpful!! And when to do it? That morning, the night before, when??

I heard they did not give them anymore. I am thinking about taking a laxative or something. I really do not want to poop all over myself.

I didn't have one with either birth, it wasn't even an option given at any point and had no pooping problems before labor. Kind of gross, but had loose stools leading up to labor anyway, so I think nature just took care of it itself. My big problem was going afterward! No one every tells you about that. You have to get a stool softener, so it isn't so unfomfortable (it really wasn't painful, just weird) the first time after birth. My second birth, though, it wasn't a problem at all.

Hmmm...looks like I am the minority here, but my doc insisted that I have an enema ( as she does all patients). It really was not that bad, and I did not have to worry about poop durring labor! Plus, I felt like 10lbs lighter going into birth ( sorry if TMI!)

At first all I could think about is how embarra__sing it would be, but I think pooping on myself would be worse.

u forget all about pooping when ur in labor. I pooped and peed and I never even knew it

i was offered enema with my previous two births but like mom42 nature took care of it in that i went to the toilet quite a few times in very early labor. If you feel constipated then it would not be a bad idea to have one though, the ones they offered me were just a little tube with oil.

lol for me..so many nasty things happened that it didnt even matter that i pooped while giving birth. Honestly thats what u feel like ur doing the whole time anyways.(while pushing) Its not a big deal..but if u want an enema u can alwyas ask. its not usually routine procedure but some places wil give them to u
