I am 5 months and have been prescribed vicodin for severe tooth/gum pain. Is this harmful to my baby and if NOT at what point should I stop using it before delivering? Thanks

missy I would not take that at all, especialy while pregnant. it is HIGHLY additive, take it from someone who used to have a problem with them.

NOT everyone gets addicted to them. it's more about your self-control.

the hydrocodone is harmful to your baby. I think Missy has a good point, I am more concerned about the addicitve nature of narcotics to the unborn child. The answer from hmmm is correct, not everyone gets addicted, but the fact that this medication crosses the blood-brain barrier means that it crosses into the baby's bloodstream. Mother's who take narcotics during pregnancy, prescribed or not, put their baby at risk for several anomalies. And though it is possible that your pregnancy is flawless, it is very likely that your baby will cry alot, be very fussy, etc., for the first few months after delivery. Why? Narcotics withdrawal symptoms.

I was exactly 5 months pregnant when I went in for a severe tooth ache...i called my OB before any drugs were prescribed and he said that I could be prescribed Codine or Vicadin for pain.
