Bleeding Behind The Placenta

I am 8 weeks pregnant with my 3rd child and had to have an ultrasound today due to spotting. My doctor said that there was an area behind the placenta that was bleeding, but that there was no known cause. He also said that everything would "probably" be okay. I don't know if I'm just paranoid, but it seems like there should be a better explanation than "no known cause". Has anyone ever heard of this before and what the effects of the bleeding could be if it persists? I'm just worried about what could possibly happen and what the bleeding may cause. (On a good note, I not only saw the baby's heartbeat - but got to hear it!)

Kelly, on April 12, 2005 I delivered my son William at 22 weeks due to severe placenta abruption. William died an hour and 11 minutes after he was born. What happened to me is extreme---over 50% of the placenta separated from my uterus causing me to hemorage and forced me to deliver William. You may want to ask your doctor if he sees any separation or tearing of the placenta. Please take it slow! I see you have 3 children so it might be very difficult, but you need to rest and not stress your body. This is a delicate situation. It doesnt sound like you are experiencing anything like I did but I wanted you to hear this story you can ask the right questions and take the rest you need. I was a very healthy, active 32 year old with no other pregnancy challenges and one day I woke up and was having contractions and bleeding severely. Good luck and keep me posted......to add salt to my wound on Oct 3rd I miscarried our 2nd son.

It sounds like you are talking about a subchorionic hematoma. Ask your doctor if that is what it is. Most pregnancies turn out fine but my hematoma just got too big under the baby's placenta and wiped out my pregnancy at close to 12 wks. I saw my babys heartbeat every week since wk 6 because I was being monitored by my doctor but when I went in at close to 12 wks for my ultrasound the whole pregnancy was not there. It was a major shock to me. Make sure your doctor monitors you or ask to see a specialist if you are bleeding really bad.
