I had a 3d ultrasound last week and the Doctor informed me that he sees too much fluid around the baby's heart and he thinks it is due to a hole in the baby's heart. He is referring us to a specialist next week. Does anyone know how common this is and what kind of outcome we should expect? It is all this unknowing that is stressful.

I dont mean to alarm you but that is a characteristic of many babies born with chromosone abnormalities. Such as down syndrom etc. Did you have an amnio or any other tests to rule that posibilities out? With my last pregnancy I was at risk for having a child with chromosone problem and had ultra sound done to rule out and that was one of the things they looked for. They told me they werent 100% that I wouldnt have a child that was born with Trisomy 18 (another disorder) but didnt look as if I would and gave me the choice of aborting or carrying. I decided to carry on with pregnancy and now I have a healthy 3 year old son.

We did all the testing for Down Syndrom and Spinal Bifida and both came back as a low chance, that is why I am so shocked at the news of the hole in the heart. I am happy to hear that you have a healthy 3 year old boy- we are having a boy also, this will be my 2nd boy and my husband's first. Thanks for your comment.

Tammy , My son also had a "hole" or also known as an Atrial Septal Defect. he was born at 36 weeks and weighed 4lbz 9oz. The hole eventually closed on its own ...and 14 years later he is 150 lbs and 5ft 11. Dont a__sume the worst 'cause it might all be just FINE! Hang in there!

Thanks so much...I love hearing that things work out. I am trying to keep my spirits up, but now the Doctor saw something wrong with the baby's right kidney, so they are even more concerned. I will keep my hopes up and just worry about the heart right now and worry about the kidney later.
