Low Fetal Heart Rate In Second Trimester

After already having a miscarriage at 7 1/2 weeks, we were very excited to be pregnant again only 2 months after. I am now 16weeks 3days and just went to get an U/S after having a positive AFP. I am only 23 years old (trying for our first) and the genetic counselor told me I'm at a 37 year old risk level. Afterwards, we went in to have the U/S. The baby looked great, (we found out the baby is a girl...) she was the perfect size maybe even a little bigger by a couple of days, 5oz already, doctor said her brain, head, legs, arms, stomach...everthing was perfect and the right size as well (we were checking for down symdrome) however then he noticed the heart rate as 70bpm. I have to go to a pediatric cardiologist to find out why the rate is so low. I just had an appt with my OB yesterday and he said the heart sounded fine. He never told me in any of our visits what the heart rate was so we don't know if it was always low or if it dropped. We are very scared, I don't want to lose this baby...has anyone ever heard of this with a positive outcome? Can it just go up and be fine? Please help!

I forgot to say my HCG levels are fine as well. Everything is perfect in this pregnancy, I have even started to feel the baby move ever now and then. The only problem is the low heart rate.

I have heard of baby's being in deep sleep in utero. Sometimes the heartbeat is not as high when they are sleeping. It sound like everything is fine with the pregnancy. Good luck and best wishes.

Also, why don't you call your ob and ask what the hb was yesterday just so you know if it has increased.

I agree with Lynne...they should record all that down and you should be able to get that information to compare. Good luck and keep us posted!!!

You know, that is exactly what i did. My OB said although he never took down the actual number or BPM, he was very shocked and said that it had never been that low and to keep him posted. Aside from that...we went to the pediatric cardiologist today (i got an appt. that was a no show so we got in one week early) and we found that the baby's heart rate went back to normal between 130 and 140. They are going to test me for lupus and all other antibodies that might be in my blood because I guess that can happen when the mother has lupus, but for now, everything looks fine and they are going to continue checking up on it to make sure it doesn't do that again. I have a follow up in 2 weeks with both the U/S and the cardiologist. They are such good doctors. Hopefully everything comes back alright with me now.
