A Caution Toward D Amp C

To everyone concerned for a miscarriage: I had an ultrasound at about 5 weeks and they couldn't find the baby. I was told I had miscarried and that I should have a D & C. For some reason (womanly intuition) I did not trust this and requested that I have another ultrasound in a week. I did, and this time they found the baby! Every single pregnancy is different, and doctors are far, FAR too anxious to diagnose! Just wanted to let everyone know, there is hope yet.

At 5 weeks, they can't always see a fetal pole & hartbeat, so it was certainly premature for them to diagnose miscarriage. A D&C is usually not necessary at 5 weeks--it would have been much wiser to able to miscarry naturally with little risk of hemmorhage or complications. If the bleeding went on too long, then they could consider surgery, but it's a major invasive procedure that has many risks including uterine scarring and complications due to anaesthetic, best avoided if possible.

True, you shouldn't need a d/c at five weeks and most heartbeats don't show up until 6 weeks. But just a friendly reminder - If you have had more than one m/c and want genetic testing on the baby, it is in your best interest to chose a d/c. If you pa__s it naturally and bring it to the lab to be sent out, the chances of getting any answers is greatly reduced. The baby has to be preserved in sterile solution, stored below 40 degrees, and shipped to a lab that specializes in DNA testing within 24 hours. I was not given all of this info by my Dr when I chose to miscarry at home. And needless to say, I never got my answers I so desparately needed. I agree that it is better for your body m/c naturally, but not if you need genetic testing.
