hi - i am just 26 weeks - and failed my glucose screen test (gestational diabetes screening) yesterday. i am ofcourse concerned - but not sure what to make of it - - - anyone with experience on this?? --- i have to go again next week for the 3 hour version - but my OB is concerned. i have been sick for 2 weeks now too - wonder if that has any bearing on results? (i know prob not!) --- looking for some sort of what is to come now that the test was a bust. thanks for your input.

Its okay. There are a LOT of women who fail the one hour test and do just fine on the three hour. It could be that perhaps you ate something before the test that gave you some extra sugar in your blood and caused you to fail. Don't worry until you get the results from that three hour test! It happens a lot!

thanks kathy --- i didn't eat in the morning - i went right after i got up - so i wouldn't eat something and screw it up!!! i had a tiny bit of milk and some water before the testing, but that's it. . . . . i hope it's still going to be good next test.

Julie= You will have to drink the yukky stuff and then be test once and hour for three hours, I always chew ice during this time as it helps with the nausea and the icky stomach. I have gestational diabetes every pregnancy and you just have to watch your diet usually. But don't worry yet most people pa__s the second one if you don't ,post again and I'll get you more info on my story. Best of luck ot you.

thanks momjoy -- is there anything i should do before the 3 hr test? someone said carb load for 3 days --????? and someone else said be sure to eat breakfast that day - but i am pretty sure i can't eat anything after midnight they said. . . . . did you have to take your blood sugar 3 times a day while pregnant? did it harm the baby to have GD? thanks for the info.

Julie: I had to fast for 12 hours. And before the test I just ate normal, I figured why try to fool a test. I had to test my blood sugar 4 times a day while pregnant, but I followed a diet the diet_tian gave me that was 6 small meals a day, and it went really well. I never had to take meds or shots or anything, I never cheated on the diet either-- I was so afraid to harm my baby. I did have to have stress test on the baby every week from 32 weeks on and I had more ultrasounds, but that part was fun!! Both my babies weren't too big 7lbs 10oz and 8 lbs 4 oz(15 and 1/2 YEARS APART LOL!!) and they had no complications and still don't --they are 17 years old and 18 months old. I stayed diabetic for about 8 weeks after delivery and then I was fine. But definitely bring a cup of ice along and ask for more if you need it during, it sure helped me a ton!! I also brought a friend along to talk to so I could keep my mind off it all! I will be praying for you!! It isn't as scary as they make it and it is manageable, and so totally worth your healthy baby in the end!! BEST OF LUCK!!

thanks momjoy!! -- my kids are currently eldest daughter going to be 22 on april 6 ---- then i have a 2 yr old daughter and now we are expecting our 1st boy in june. i had NO issues with either of the others (but since the birth of my 2 y/o i had 2 miscarriages and this pregnancy seems to awfully difficult). i got pg the day before i turned 40~! thanks for the info - i will bring some ice - i asked today about water - and she said NOPE! and no getting up to move around during the test either (it metabolizes the sugar faster they said). i am putting it off till late next week since ihave a sinus infection or allergies or something wretched. and i want to have atleast one tiny bit of easter candy -- i am sure the guilt will make it taste bad!!! i don't want to do anything to risk this pregnancy either ~ so i will follow whatever rules they set forth.

I have had 3 miscarriages since my son and am TTC again, I will be 39 in two months!! I was pretty much sick my entire pregnancies, but they sure are worth it!! I will be keeping you in my prayers!! One piece of candy won't hurt ---just eat lots of protein first to balance it out and don't go to sleep after eating sugar and you'll be fine!! I asked about water too, and they said no but you can have your ice though, go figure!! Hopefully they'll let you too!! If you have to follow the diet it isn't really too bad, but let me tell you once I delivered I had a pepsi and some chocolate immediately!!! Let me know how the test goes!!

Hi Julie - I just wanted to chime in that GD isn't that bad. If caught early, it can be managed with changes to your diet. I was diagnosed with GD at 11 weeks with my first pregnancy. Eventually, I had to take Glyburide to keep my fasting levels down. My son was born 7lbs 3oz and has had no problems. As a bonus, because of the diet changes, I only gained a couple pounds during the pregnancy (I was easily 30lbs overweight to start), and afterwards lost 18 lbs which I've managed to keep off 18 months later. If you can't bring a friend to the 3-hr test, bring a good book. Good luck.

I had GD with my daughter, caught at twenty eight weeks. I had to change my diet and see a dietician every once in awhile. It wasn't that bad, it just took some self control, and healthy new habits (Plus I had to chart my blood sugar) but sometimes if it went high I'd be sick for awhile. That may be why you're feeling ill. I started feeling strange before I found out. Good luck on the three hour!
