How Long Can You Bleed After A Miscarriage

I miscarried on April 23, passing large clots (size of plums) for 2 days. It then slowed down for a week, and I passed the large clots again for another 2 days. After the 2nd heavy passage, I had an ultrasound on May 4th, and was told there was alot of retained tissue. I didn't want a d&c because I don't do well with anesthetics. My bleeding seemed to get lighter, and I had another ultrasound on May 12, and was told there was not much leftover in my uterus, and it would pass on its own. I had light bleeding to spotting from May 12th until May 31st, when I had 3 more days of heavy bleeding, and passing clots again. Since June 3, I've been spotting on and off. The week of June 4th to 10th I would get up in the morning to an empty pad, but by afternoon, I would pass bright pink blood for between 6 and 3 hours, after which it would totally stop again. The week of June 11th, I went 3 days with no bleeding, and then started bleeding for between 1 and 1/2 to 4 hours a day again. The past couple of days I've been bleeding for 1 hour a day, and then the bleeding magically stops. Is this normal? I went to the doctors this morning, and got an HCG test taken, because I took a home pregnancy test, and it came back very faintly positive. Is it possible that my HCG is really taking this long to go down to normal? I am in my 8th week now after my miscarriage. I just wanted to know if anyone else has had this problem?

gosh lisab, i really am sorry for what you're going through. it's so hard to lose the pregnancy, but then to bleed for so long too is just a whole other kind of cruel. i bleed for about three weeks and thought that was a lifetime - my heart really goes out to you. that said, i think you probably ought to see your dr again. it's true that it can take a reaaaally long time for the HCG to go down, but since you had retained tissue on your two previous u/s, i'd really recommend that you go for another scan to see what's going on. 8 weeks seems too long to me from all my reading, and there are other options than d&c if there is anything still in there. most importantly though, you deserve a little peace and so they need to help you find a way to stop the bleeding altoghter. my best best wishes go out to you...

I am having the same type of bleeding. I miscarried on April 21st. I am still spotting and then somedays just heavy bleeding for a few hours then it stops. I went to my Dr. about 2 weeks ago he said this could go on like this for 6 months or so.

Hi Big Red, Did you have a d&c, or miscarry naturally? Have you had any ultrasounds to see if your uterus is clear? It is comforting to hear your reply, and that I am not the only one who is going through this. Maybe it is normal. Thank you.

Hi llisab, I had a natural m/c. I was in the parking lot of my Dr.'s office to have the d&c done morining of 4/21/06 and i just got a huge gush of blood in the parking lot. So he sent me home told me to come back that following for u/s to make sure everything had pa__sed. It had they just said there was some clots a tissue left that my body would absorb or just bleed out. The last really heavy bleed I had was mothers day weekend I thought something was really wrong with just all the sudden big gushes and pain. I called the on call Dr. at my clinic and he said it was natural it was over 1/2 cup in about 1 hour sorry if TMI. Then it magically stoped that night and started up again on mothers day at the BBQ I was at. Same way. I went to my Dr. and he just told me to again double up on my BC pills to try and get the bleeding stoped and then regulate. He said there was no need for pelvic exam or u/s he just said this was normal and could last up to 6 months. That was devistaing news this is horrible I just couldn't beleive that I might have to have almost a daily reminder of this for possible the next 6 months. I do have to admit it makes it harder to start to move on with normal life when I am reminded every day. Not that I would ever forget but I would just like it if things were just a little easier you know. Hope this helps I would enjoy chatting with you on here! {{{hugs}}}

I am so sorry for what you're having to go through . My doctor gave me some bc pills, but I have yet to take them. I haven't been on the pill since I was 20, and I was just a little uneasy about taking them again. I guess theyv'e changed alot since then - I'm 37 now! My doctor did not give me a pelvic exam either - he doesn't seem too concerned about my bleeding, but hey, when your'e bleeding for 8 weeks straight almost every day, you begin to wonder - you know? anyways, I'd love to keep chatting with you, you seem really sweet - and keep your chin up - it will get better...I read your other postings about your boyfriend, and how he got a vasectomy without really discussing it with you. I think that you really do need to sit down with him, and tell him how you feel. Big hugs for you{{{}}}, and I hope to talk again soon...

I am very sorry for you loss and that you are having to go throug all this. I have not taken the pills my Dr. gave me either I was just wanting this to be over on it's own. My boyfriend knows I am not taking the pills and I was just hoping that the vasectomy did not take and that I would end up pregnant in the long run. He knows how I feel I have told him that it hurts me and that I don't know if I will be able to stay with him and get married because I do want to have more children I would really like a son and so would both of my daughters they want a baby brother. He knows that I may not stick around for the long haul with him. Unless I have some change of heart. I pretty much new this relationship prob. would not work the day we left the Dr.'s office on 4/14/06 they told us there was no heatbeat or color flow. I was devistated. In the car on the way home I told him I did not want to get back on any of the medication I had been taking prior to getting pregnant and just start trying again right away. It seemed fairly logical to me to try again right away. He flipped out. So I knew then I have just been avoiding the enevitable hoping he would have changed his mind. Sorry to ramble so long thanks for listening and responding so quick to my last post it makes me feel better knowing I am not alone other women are going through the same thing as me. Baby dust!! {{{hugs}}}
